Join us LIVE at 9am Thursday (AEDT)!
This week we are joined by Bronwyn Kidd!
Bronwyn is an Australian photographer known for fashion and portraiture. She built her career through hands-on industry experience before moving to London in 1992, aged 23. There, her work quickly gained attention, leading to an exclusive commission with Sir Hardy Amies for his Savile Row collections.
Drawing on the legacy of haute couture photography, her images blend nostalgia, wit and cinematic atmosphere, and are held in collections including the National Portrait Gallery, London.

Portraiture is a collaboration - capturing a moment in time. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. A portrait can feel right in one moment and uncertain in another. When I am making it, I don’t realise its future importance.
There is pressure when making a portrait - I want it to be right. But right for when? Right for now, or for another time? Does it honour the past? Does it show the person as they should be shown? These questions constantly circle my mind while I am preparing, while I am photographing the portrait, editing, printing, and finally presenting it to the sitter.
With this portrait; Maudie Palmer AO No.2, The Good Room At Glendale, I took a gamble. The image required considerable technical and emotional thought. This room had never been photographed before -it was Maudies favourite. We placed a clay pot made by Maudie on the mantle, and the fifty-year-old native maidenhair that usually lived by the side entrance joined other treasured, memory-laden objects.
After editing and presenting Maudie with large contact sheets, I travelled to Sydney to print with Sandy. From three chosen frames, we decided to cut the film and reassemble it as a triptych panorama. It was risky, in truth, Sandy did the cutting, not me. The final print is large - and it needed to be. Maudie needed to have a presence in The Good Room, Glendale - an extraordinary place, an historic home filled with art and stories.
It was Andy Dinan who kindly introduced me to Maudie - with the idea to photograph her. Maudie was the second portrait of my series, Women in Art. We arranged to meet in between lockdown restrictions, we talked openly for hours - about art, life, history, about woman. It was a gift to be in her presence and to hear so generously, her stories.
I didn’t bring my camera that day, a process I deeply value: spending time talking, before making the photograph.
Maudie offered me a Glendale sapling River gum, in our garden it stands as a living memory of my time with Maudie - and these portraits, a still moment, preserved.
Journey well, wonderful Maudie.
Maudie Palmer AO, No.2 2022

‘Through Her Breath’ — Bronwyn Kidd @bronwynkidd
Bronwyn Kidd’s black-and-white photograph depicts two dancing bodies folded together, suspended between shadow and light. Working with layered analogue and digital processes, Bronwyn traces a cinema of memory, womanhood and community through gesture and atmosphere.
Here, body, breath and earth converge into a quiet archive of presence; an image that feels both timeless and tender, radiating a deep, feminine resolve.

Congratulations to Bronwyn Kidd, the winner of the 2025 Martin Kantor Portrait Prize, for her portrait of renowned photographer Polly Borland.
“This portrait is homage and exchange, intimate and engaged. Polly costumed as a silhouette beneath flying cape conjures the super-heroic, the oracle, trickster—all herself.
“In the quiet studio, with light honed to the exact timbre of our friendship, we built this portrait in awareness of beloved past technologies; originally shot on negative, I scanned the film, retouched, leaving tape marks intact as evidence of process, then made negatives and printed them in the darkroom.” - Bronwyn Kidd, 2025 Martin Kantor Portrait Prize winner.

I’m thrilled to be part of the Martin Kantor Portrait Prize with my new portrait of Polly Borland @polly_borland - Polly Borland No.1 2025, 20 finalists have been announced in The Guardian, it is fantastic to be amongst such wonderful photographers and photographs.
Polly and I have shared a long-standing friendship born out of photography, it’s a great joy to be able to honour that connection through this work.
..We met in London in 1992 where I began my career, assisting Polly. That grew into decades-long friendship and still I am captivated by how she conjures the uncanny with such effect, how she distorts and reveals, in the same moment, the psychological layers. As we two women navigated image-making, I watched Polly claim her space through invention and risk..This, my new portrait is homage and exchange, intimate and engaged. Polly costumed as a silhouette beneath flying cape conjures the super-heroic, the oracle, trickster—all herself.
The exhibited print will celebrate Polly on the last of Kodak metallic, thank you @sandyprints1 for all that you bring that shines, and thank you to @visualthingstudio for your continuing dedication to beauty.
Thank you Polly 🪽✨🤍
