I’ve written a memoir about queer British TV. It’s called Out Now and it’s out in September.
Section 28, the homophobic law that banned anything about homosexuality being taught in schools, meant that a generation of queer people relied on television to learn about love, sex and intimacy. Yet as TV was never built to take on this role, these moments were rare or could be misread.
I’ve always been fascinated at how television shapes a person, so I decided to write about how it shaped me. I hope that it makes you think about the TV that shaped your life.
Maxxie from Skins, Andrew Van De Kamp from Desperate Housewives, John Paul and Craig from Hollyoaks all had a huge impact on me. This book looks at how these characters, shows and storylines shaped me for the better and, sometimes, worse.
This book is about love, grief, longing and growing up. It’s also an unexpected deep dive into neurodivergence. The day I started writing this was the day I found out that I was autistic. Baby you’re with me for the ride in the months before I told anyone else. At its heart, though, this book is a love letter to the power of television and how it connects us.
This book is dedicated to my mum and dad. I wrote it in my childhood bedroom over an eight-month period after my dad became ill. Every writing break, I would pop downstairs and chat to him in the living room. I am sad that my dad never got to see the finished book. It also feels surreal to be letting this book go as it reflects such a significant period of my life; I was thinking about my parents at every moment. I hope I’ve made them (and the family) shine on the page.

Today kicks off Mental Health Awareness week, with the theme for this year being ACTION:
❤️ For yourself
💙 For someone else
💚 For all of us
As @mentalhealthfoundation have aptly shared: 'raising awareness is vital, but real change comes when we take action too.'
And we'd like to do our part to encourage the same. We are honoured to publish books like To The Women, Wild Hope, Loss, Words To Live by and Joy Chose You.
Books by @donnaashworthwords - who has been an advocate for mental health for all, and especially a beacon for women who struggle with this.
For every season of healing and hope, @donnaashworthwords has words of comfort. And we want to offer a bundle of her books as a way to spread her magic.
Simply comment below if you'd like to win, and tag someone who would also love to win this. If you are selected as a winner, we will send you and the tagged person a bundle each.
T&Cs apply. Winners will be selected at random Monday 18th May. Must be 18+ and resident of the UK.

We Don't Use Words Like Crazy is a 'professional confessional' from Elliot Sweeney, a mental health nurse who works on the frontline of mental health services. His touching and often humorous memoir lifts the lid on the realities of the profession, in an attempt to highlight the need for compassion for some of the most vulnerable people in the world, and the very committed people that work with them on a professional basis.
We Don’t Use Words Like Crazy is out in paperback now.
Breaking news! Signed and dedicated copies of The State of This! A Thicky Thicky Dumb Dumb's Guide to British Politics are available through @backstory.london 📝 Numbers are limited so don't miss out!

We're excited to share that Consumed by @saabirawrites is out in paperback today; and it's a book everyone should pick up.
How did plastic take over our lives?
And why have we been unable to rein it in?
In investigating how we got here, Consumed is the call to arms for us all to make better decisions about where we go next. It is only by understanding this history that we will stop accepting the same failed solutions and demand better for the future.

@Lucy_Lapwing's Love is a Toad reminds us that loving nature is never tidy. It is joyful, uncomfortable, grieving, hopeful and gloriously alive. We’re delighted to share a curated collection from Lucy that brings together books that sit alongside Love Is a Toad, writing that kneels in bogs, listens closely to beetles and birdsong and dares to feel deeply about the living world.
These are stories of attention and attachment, of wild places and the emotions they stir in us, for anyone who has ever felt awe, anger, delight or defiant hope in the face of nature’s fragile beauty.
