HOW I MADE "12 TONE DANSE"

1: pick the right floppy disk
2: put it into the floppy drive
3: plug in the clunky power supply
4: switch on the commodore 64
plug its video output into the television set
5: load the sequencer software from the floppy
6: play midi notes on the keyboard
organise them in the midi sequencer
7: use the midi interface to send the notes to
8: various synthesizers and the drum machine
9: be a happy billy

I wrote and recorded the original version of "Twelve Tone Danse" when I was 19 years old. That's why it is somewhat more eccentric than my usual releases, but @mujik from @mjkrecs wanted this tune to be heard and played, now.

Why that name? We were discussing #musichistory at school. Back in the 1920's intellectual music was very much in a crisis and nerds would come up with weird mathematical approaches to making music to avoid it from being what humans expect music to be. One such odd rule is to play all twelve tones available in an octave in a row before you're allowed to repeat the procedure, this way ensuring that the result sounds disharmonic to the human species.

Back home I decided that I would try to hide a twelve tone progression in the middle of an otherwise very appealing piece, so I recorded this very happy upbeat dance music tune which at some point suddenly goes weird and does its little twelve tone thing.

Still, I think abstract approaches to making music do not take into account how the human species perceives it. Jazz harmony theory makes a lot of sense instead, emotionally. Yes, I later studied jazz, because it helped me understand what I was doing.

Notice the name on the screen of the sequencer software. It's the same dude that later went on to develop Creator, Logic and GarageBand.

Recently my friend @omarsharifdontlikeit of @yesandthesun picked this tune out of my #HiNRG archives and reworked it into the #indiedance banger it is now. The song is now available in the usual major platforms and outlets. You can find them in the #discography section of my homepage.

Back in 1978, Lene Lovich had already contributed to 3 albums and was just about to release her solo album with her big new wave hit "Lucky Number" when Marc Cerrone invited her to visit Paris and put words on top of an unnamed disco song. She came up with the dramatic lyrics of "Supernature" and sang them. As her career took off within the new wave, bearing that witch look that inspired Kate Bush and Nina Hagen to follow up, she probably forgot about that disco tune she had recorded for Cerrone.

As I met her yesterday she told me she had sung those lyrics on top of a full old-school disco arrangement, with strings and everything. She didn't seem aware that the tune is legendary for being one of the first fully electronic club anthems. If that's true, where did the disco version go? I also asked her whether she had a hand in writing the brilliant chord progression of that song, but she denied. So this is her interpretation of it. Unfortunately the storage of my phone ran out before reaching the bridge with the interesting chord change.

I still think my version of Supernature is the best of all, of course. Probably because it fits exactly my own taste - which is the reason I started writing music in the first place. I wanted to do the kind of songs that I felt were missing in the public discourse.
