Working with my friends at @paperworknyc has been a genuine pleasure — not as a simple platitude, but because the work matters. PAPER WORK in my opinion is the premier underground book publisher in LA, maybe on the West Coast.

Getting artist-photographers’ work into print, into people’s hands, and outside the constant censorship, compression, and disposability of our daily digital lives feels like one of the most urgent things we can do as photographers right now.

This time around, I’m proud to be in a roster of artists I’ve known for years, alongside new voices from Japan.

HARD LIMITS will be available at LAABF with PAPER WORK booth @printedmatter_artbookfairs beginning May 7 and throughout the weekend.

the reason magazine photos don’t look like your camera roll, this is prep for @blackgreymag new issue THE SIMULATION. Try this little experiment.

I took this photo of @venustrjegul in @hannahstudiola latex on a high resolution @leicacamerausa digital at 60MP. Converted with all effects, scanned at 3200 dpi. printed. Then converted again. Some clean up.

There is no color grade. no luts. no “cinematic” preset doing the work for me.

what you’re seeing is what happens when you let the paper hold it for a minute. the ink absorbs something. the scanner reads that. the image loses whatever makes a digital file feel like it’s still happening to you. Psychologically a scientist once told me on film you see the grain fist the contrast in digital you see the sharpness. Here you have the best of both worlds.

magazine images never look live, or like AI. that’s not a flaw. that’s the condition they were made for — to be encountered on a page, not a screen. this gets you back there without lying about it. Maybe it’s the clean capture of digital without gussying with film. Maybe the next step is transfer to film from digital instead of the reverse.

the color is the color. the grain is the grain. the paper did the grading. This is just one of my processes.
