Biddle Bros

🚇Hackney Central
🍺 £6.20 Guinness
Biddle Bros is located in Clapton, Hackney, East London. The nearest station is Hackney Central.
Since the 1960’s, the building was a builders’ merchant known as Biddle Bros. Builders Ltd. In 2004, it was converted into a pub/bar, with the owners preserving the unique gold-leaf signage and traditional shopfront.
This is a long, narrow, one-bar, two-room pub with an homely, lived-in feel that celebrates the building’s heritage. The servery is located at the front right, with a drinking ledge opposite and comfy seating by the window. The rear room is more spacious, with some unusual furniture and a number of musical instruments.
The decor features a boarded floor at the front and a red-painted concrete floor at the back, a remnant of its days as a builders’ merchant. The walls are adorned with a mix of interesting artworks, along with a couple of Clapton FC scarves. Traditional light fixtures hang across the bright red ceiling—not forgetting the extractor fan at the end of the bar.
The beer selection is all keg, with a line-up that should please most tastes. Guinness seemed popular, so I went for a pint of the black stuff—mine was excellent, price was around average. No food is served, but I did see a sign for Yard Sale Pizza, who deliver here.
I arrived at 1:30pm on a Saturday afternoon in February. The pub was fairly busy, with a friendly crowd of loyal locals. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, making it easy to settle in. I had a chat with the Guv’nor, who was equally friendly. The service was excellent—the lady on duty was funny and personable.
This pub is best known for its live music, showcasing up-and-coming local indie and grassroots bands, plus DJ nights—most of which are free. There’s usually a gig on each night from Thursday to Sunday. Check out @biddlebros for what’s on.
This was a superb visit, friendly people , old school local pub vibes, quality pints and there’s plenty on to keep you entertained. Loved it here, a must visit if you’re in the area.
