As we celebrate 45 years and recognize International Museum Day, we’re reminded that preserving history is also about preserving place, community, and the stories that connect us.

The home of BHMVA carries a history of its own. In 1894, Richmond City Council approved funding for the Leigh Street Armory for Richmond’s African American militiamen. Over the years, the building served many purposes including Monroe School for Black children and later as a gymnasium annex for nearby Graves Middle School before reopening in 1942 for African American servicemen during World War II. It later survived a devastating fire in 1985 and underwent years of restoration and rebuilding.

In 1981, Carroll W. Anderson Sr. founded the Black History Museum, beginning a journey that would eventually lead to a permanent home in Jackson Ward. By 2013, the museum acquired the historic Leigh Street Armory, and in 2016 reopened as the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia with restored spaces and new exhibitions.

History has always lived within these walls...

Today, we’re proud to continue that work through exhibitions, programs, and conversations that help preserve and share Black history across Virginia. Thank you to everyone who has supported this journey and helped keep these stories alive!

Last week we welcomed 64 second graders from Arthur R. Ashe Jr. Elementary School to the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia for our Children’s Book Festival!

Students spent the day pouring into themselves and each other by creating affirmation books and recognizing the power already within them, learning about Black inventors, getting some movement in with @vareptheatre, and enjoying storytelling with J. Ron Fleming of @efsinc.

Every student also left with a book bag filled with books to take home, extending the experience beyond the museum and encouraging a continued love for reading.

Days like this matter... helping young people see themselves in stories and history can stay with them long after they leave 📚

What we build should outlive us.

And at BHMVA, we believe preserving and sharing these stories is an important part of that work. Through exhibitions, programs, and community conversations, we help carry forward the history, lessons, and legacy that future generations will inherit.

But just as important, as a community we ALL have something to pass down. Share those family stories. Write names down. Ask questions. Support spaces that help keep history alive. You never know what part of your story could mean something to someone years from now...

Dr. King Davis, who served as the first Black commissioner of Virginia’s mental health system, helped preserve and digitize more than 800,000 historic records and photographs connected to Central State Hospital in Petersburg, Virginia which is recognized as America’s first public mental health hospital created specifically for Black patients.

When the archives faced possible destruction, Dr. Davis led efforts to secure funding, build partnerships, and organize teams of researchers and archivists to protect the records for future generations. His work helped preserve the stories of thousands of Black patients whose lives and experiences were often excluded from historical records.

For his efforts, Dr. Davis received the 2019 Benjamin Rush Award from the American Psychiatric Association for outstanding contributions to the history of psychiatry.

His work continues to shape conversations around mental health, history, race, and preservation across Virginia and beyond.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to recognize the importance of mental health, access to care, and the stories that have shaped mental health history in America.

At @bhmva, we preserve and share stories that inspire!

Did you know? Earl Lloyd (@earllloyd_nba), the first Black player in NBA history, was born and raised in Alexandria, Virginia during segregation.

Lloyd grew up in the city’s historic Parker-Gray neighborhood and attended the segregated Parker-Gray High School, where he became a standout basketball player under Coach Louis R. Johnson. At the time, Black students in Alexandria faced unequal facilities and limited opportunities, but Parker-Gray became a source of pride, excellence, and community.

After graduating in 1946, Lloyd earned a scholarship to West Virginia State College before making history with the Washington Capitols in 1950.

He won an NBA Championship with the Syracuse Nationals in 1955. That made him not only the first Black player to appear in an NBA game, but also one of the first Black players to win an NBA championship.

Today, his legacy continues to be honored in Alexandria, where courts, streets, and historical markers recognize the impact of a Black Virginian who helped change the game forever.

At @bhmva, we preserve and share stories that inspire.
