Well, what a year it has been! 2025 was the year that:

1. Our CBBC doc 'Jumping Jack's Darts' came out
2. I got to speak at the @natural_history_museum
3. I went to Miami to speak on the creative applications and risks of AI in production at @realscreen
4. Virtually Parkinson came out with our amazing guests, @jasonderulo , @chesneyhawkesofficial, @chrismccauslandcomedy, @jillscottjs8, @fatima.whitbread, @themontydon, @joetracini & @stevenwmoffat
5. We created virtual twins for @women_in_data in front of a live audience of 3,500 people
6. We launched our AI Protocols and Practices course with the @nftsfilmtv
7. I spoke about AI with senior leaders across the @bbc & @bbccymruwales
8. I appeared at the @mpts_london to share my knowledge of AI in production
9. I was interviewed by @itvwales
10. We got to bring Virtually Parkinson live to the @d_and_ad awards and the @podcastshowldn
11. I refused to sit on uncomfortable chairs whilst talking to a prestigious audience at @lewissilkin 😂
12. Iwas lucky enough to be invited to @banffmedia to share my AI expertise with a packed audience
13. I was named in the top 50 video professionals
14. We launched our in house production software Verbl with @topfotoarchives aimed at reducing cost for digital production at the @broadcast_tech and archive summit
15. We filmed a pilot for a UK broadcaster with @francescarowanplowden
16. I got to travel to the @sitgesfestival to talk all things @hammer_films ahead of the launch of our Hammer: Heroes, Legends and Monsters premiere in Spain.
17. We launched our first customer facing software Scriptreadr at the @broadcast_tech AI Summit (available by searching on the interwebs)
18. I got to speak about AI profitability at an @weareinnovateuk / @theturinginst event
19. We won our first industry award for Virtually Parkinson at the @c21media Generaition Awards
20. I wrote a White Paper on the state of AI in media which led @realscreen to suggest that I have defined a new level of busy... 😂

And this is just a snapshot - I've been lucky enough to do 20+ podcasts, speaking engagements and shows I can't yet talk about.

2025 was great. Wait til you see the start of 2026...!

Still a hot topic - media created solely by Artificial Intelligence.

“Hal, create me a six part podcast all about knitting.”

“Yes, Dave.”

I've been thinking about the $1.5bn Anthropic settlement, the largest copyright agreement in history and the impact feels fairly 'big'.

What strikes me most is that the settlement was not about data mining or training. It was about replication and storage. Anthropic had downloaded and retained pirated books, and it was the act of reproducing and storing those works that triggered liability.

That distinction matters. A model that learns statistical patterns and generates new expression can seemingly be argued as transformative. A model that memorises and reproduces is not. The Getty vs Stability AI case reinforces this point on the visual side. Getty struggled to prove Stability’s model could replicate images under normal conditions, which shows how difficult it is to establish infringement when outputs are novel rather than copies.

For producers, the picture is still evolving. It is not enough to say training may be defensible and storage is not.

My feeling is that it is becoming essential that AI software be required by law to disclose its training process so users can make informed choices. AI developers should not be able to pass liability to users when the training process is opaque and highly complex. At the same time, producers retain responsibility for how outputs are used.

The distinction of liability is becoming clearer. Developers are responsible for lawful training. Producers are responsible for responsible application. Transparency must sit at the centre.

But underneath all this it's starting to feel like the training itself, regardless of whether it's based on licensed or unlicensed may not necessarily be the issue, there's a number of courts (but not all) agreeing 'fair use'. The real issue is far more complex and instead it's about how the developers proved (even to themselves) that the model was capable of working.

Posted @withregram@deepfusionfilms What happens when we can’t tell who’s real anymore?

Zachary Starr is an Instagram influencer with tens of thousands of followers, emotional posts, and a growing online presence. But here’s the twist — he isn’t real. He’s an AI-generated persona, and most of his followers don’t know it.

At the same time, the owner of OnlyFans is preparing to sell the platform for nearly £6 billion — partly in response to the rise of AI-generated adult content.

This video unpacks how those two stories are connected — and what they tell us about the future of trust, identity, and digital influence.

Transparency. Consent. Authenticity.
As AI personas blur the lines between performance and manipulation, these aren’t just buzzwords — they’re urgent questions.

Posted @withregram@deepfusionfilms This week, a major legal battle begins at the High Court in London — and it could shape the future of AI, creativity, and copyright as we know it.

Getty Images is taking on Stability AI, accusing them of using millions of copyrighted images to train their generative models without permission.

Why should you care? Because the outcome could determine whether AI companies are free to use the world’s creative work without paying for it — or whether they’ll have to start licensing that material, potentially costing billions.

This isn’t just a tech story. It’s about the future of film, TV, music, publishing, and social media. If you’re a creator, developer, or just someone using AI tools, what happens next affects you.

Watch the video for the full breakdown — and follow us for more updates as the case unfolds.

2. Demonstrated that I shouldn't wear a hat.
3. Spoken about the brand impact Virtually Parkinson on the Sir Michael Parkinson archive at the @d_and_ad awards with @imjamieanderson and @mikeparkinson68
4. Spoken about the creative applications of AI within the podcast space at @podcastshowldn
5. Sat awkwardly in a chair and discussed AI policy, guardrails potential legislation and practical applications at The AI Agenda, @lewissilkin (before complaining about chair and doing the rest of the session stood up)
6. Celebrated our Head of Creative AI, @christiandarkinpictures appearing at @gitexeurope where he demonstrated our forward thinking approach to AI in the creative industries (and from where sent me a video of a robot dog on a lead)
7. Had the results of an AI working group I was fortunate enough to be invited into by @costarnetwork publish the results of our efforts that set out practical steps to how we can safeguard human creativity in the face of AI development - specifically related to Data Provenance and fair remuneration for all.

So quite a quiet week really. I might have a glass of wine. (Glass of wine not pictured as I realise I haven't bloody got any)

So, let's unpick what just happened at @women_in_data

3 weeks ago @Roisin McCarthy, Payal Jain & Fiona Sweeney asked if Deep Fusion Films thought it was possible to make digital twins of themselves which could then open their flagship event in front of 3,500 people.

It was a bold ask. Everything needed to be believable enough to fool the audience into thinking this was just a Pre-recorded intro.

Working closely with Christian Darkin we found a way of doing it.

And then we challenged ourselves a little more. We wanted to see if we could get one of their Digital Twins to recap a panel session which one of them would claim they'd missed. The turnaround for this would be about 6 minutes from the end of the panel to the point where the host would ask for the recap.

Again, we found a solution.

Then we thought we'd try one last thing. Could we allow for a live conversation to take place between the host and their digital twin in order to announce a speaker (not just any speaker - the incredible @ccriadoperez)

We did that too.

In total we delivered 14 pieces of AI content. Some of that content was delivered live and on the fly.

We pushed ourselves with this and it paid off! The audience response to the Digital Twins was incredibly positive.

I'd like to thank the team behind Women in Data for trusting us with this monumental task and congratulate the whole DFF team for pulling it off.

We keep pushing the boundaries of ethical AI and we keep finding solutions. Good grief it's exciting!

Naturally, I couldn't turn up at an event of that size without trying to speak about the topics I'm so passionate about - AI bias/ethics/copyright and it was wonderful to appear next to Marsha Quallo-Wright, Joost de Jonge & our good friend Dr Mathilde Pavis.

What shall we do next I wonder...?

Remarkable when your programme is the poster image for a successful @cbbc series.

Thank you to everyone involved in the episode, from the wonderful @thea.harris.murphy and @danielllobo, who worked tirelessly to create wonderful moments in the episode through to @hannahwoolfson who did an absolutely phenomenal job in the edit.

Thanks to everyone else in the Deep Fusion team, Jack's family, the @jdcdartsofficial & @lukethenukelittler for helping tell Jack's amazing story.

A couple of people asked me if there was a video of me singing with the wonderful @jobuttonvocals on her wedding day.

So here it is. It was an incredible day and I absolutely loved singing with her! She should definitely be on @spamalotbway as the Lady of the Lake! (Bride of the Lake maybe?)
