Obsolescence Commons by Ben Christ (@benchrst ) and Meriç Erdoğan (@mericerdogan )
Student project from the course Studio I & Studio II
Although there are many institutionalised bodies that conduct research on reuse it tends to stay in localised settings in a closed-circuit manner, instead of being accessible for participation of the respondent crowd. Obsolescence Commons proposes a crowd-sourced data collection process for investigating abandoned structures. The platform serves as a collection point for data, sourced through open-source investigation methodologies. The estimation process consists of two actors: a machine-learning system and user input. The system does an initial estimation of the building components using a segmentation process. Afterwards, users are able to verify, refine, and contest all the data that has been provided. Through a peer-review process all the information is collectively verified to finalise an open case file. The repository of data from this platform could be used for further training machine-learning models for more precise segmentation and prediction of components.

Our Design and Computation students Ben Christ and Maria Kaminska (TU Berlin / UdK Berlin) are presenting their collaborative video installation 'Sicherheit neu denken' as part of 'Pre, Present and Post Photographic Images', an exhibition curated by the Fachbereich Gestaltung of Hochschule Bielefeld and hosted at the @satellit_hsbi in the Wissenswerkstadt Bielefeld. Organised within the international conference 'Postfotografische Bilder. Generative Bildgebungsverfahren', the exhibition brings together recent works by graduates and doctoral researchers investigating generative image-making in contemporary artistic research.
Their installation explores the rise of predictive policing systems, the reasoning behind their design and adoption, and the risks embedded in these technologies, including new forms of error and misuse tied to automated data analysis. It questions how the goal of ensuring safety can shift into opaque and self-perpetuating forms of control, using HessenData as an emblematic example within wider developments in algorithmic governance. Combining AI-generated imagery with documentary footage, the video weaves interviews, literary fiction, technical documents, and legal materials into a speculative narrative that interrogates the language and aesthetics of big data policing and examines the relationship between society and technology through a mythological imagining of a near future shaped by predictive systems.
Ben and Maria exhibit alongside Janosch Boerckel, Fernanda Braun Santos, Benjamin Friedle, Matthias Grund, Karsten Kronas, Bob Jones, Simon Schnelle, and Emilia Trog. The exhibition investigates whether computationally produced images extend or disrupt the history of photography and considers how algorithmic procedures reshape perception, chance, decision, and the relation between bodies and immaterial code.
'Pre, Present and Post Photographic Images' runs from 25 November to 20 December 2025, Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 18:00, at the HSBI Satellit in the Wissenswerkstadt Bielefeld. The opening takes place on 25 November at 18:00, followed by guided tours on 13 December at 16:00 and 20 December at 16:00.

A selected group of students is showing works at this year's Rundgang from the University of
Arts in Berlin (UdK Berlin).
The works can be seen in room 314 of the main building of UdK (Hardenbergstraße 33) and in room 6 of Medienhaus of UdK (Grunewaldstraße 2-5).
Hardenbergstraße 33:
Friday, July 18th: 16.00 - 00.00
Saturday, July 19th: 11.00 - 22.00
Sunday, July 20th: 10.00 - 21.00
Medienhaus:
Friday, July 18th: 16.00 - 00.00
Saturday, July 19th: 11.00 - 22.00
Sunday, July 20th: 10.00 - 18.00
Project Description of Sicherheit neu denken:
Sicherheit neu denken explores the rise of predictive policing systems, examining the reasoning behind their design and adoption.
It examines the risks associated with these technologies—including new kinds of errors and misuse arising from increased automation in data analysis—and questions how the rational goal of ensuring safety can spiral into increasingly opaque and convoluted practices.
The work references HessenData, a controversial data analysis tool used by the Hessian police, as an example of these emerging technologies.
Using a mix of AI-generated imagery and documentary footage, the work blends fragments of interviews, literary fiction, technical documentation, and legal texts into a speculative narrative. The video critically examines the language and aesthetics of big data policing technologies, including how their creators draw inspiration from fantasy, science fiction, and
pop culture to name and describe their tools. It reflects on the fraught relationship between society and technology through a mythological imagining of a near-future.

First teaser for my upcoming Graduation project ‘On a Day Like Yesterday’, that investigates the influence of digital devices on our relationship with reality.
@royalacademyofart.thehague @kabkphotography

‘Life has become a hybrid, in flux between the digital and the real. Truth has become subjective and identity interchangeable. Growing up in this space between the tangible and the silicon-based worlds, a new generation emerged…’ — Year 4 student Ben Christ @benchrst tells us about his upcoming Graduation project with a working title ‘On a Day like Yesterday’.
Ben: ‘I am part of this generation: When I turned 13 I got my first smartphone. Our phones informed our looks, our passions, our conversations, and our friendships. ‚On a Day like Yesterday‘ investigates the way these black boxes changed our relationship with the world around us. My generation feels more lonely and more depressed than any generation before. We spent our days looking at phones desensitising and overstimulating ourselves; becoming addicted to things like porn and social media; getting indoctrinated by technocrats and some of us radicalise into extremism. This work is an attempt to step back and slow down time to allow for reflection. If we move forward in a highly accelerative manner, not only will we become more and more detached from each other, but also from the real, living world around us’.
