Anybody who knows me, knows I have long disliked the Bay Area for its overinflated costs, bad weather, poor cell service, dirty streets, and general smugness. Tally the places I’d rather not visit, and it—for better or worse—usually tops the list.

All that said, however, on my most recent trip to the bay, I couldn’t help but be charmed.

There’s an ineffable natural beauty to San Francisco; to its flora and fauna, its mighty redwoods, its Art Deco and Beaux Arts architecture, and to that enduring 19th century spirit that built a great American city.

Lay your eyes on sprawling crimson steel of the Golden Gate, or the towering heights of Muir Woods, and it’s there: an undeniable magic.

On this trip, like so many I’ve taken into SFO, I saw the Golden Gate but forewent the usual tourist stops, the Painted Ladies, the Boudin bakery, the zig-zagging Lombard.

Instead, I endeavored to see something new, and drove to the Palace of Fine Arts. Later, I crossed the bridge and hiked into Muir Woods for the first time. In these places, everything felt brand new.

Leaving San Francisco, I was confronted with an important reminder — sometimes, all we need for a fresh perspective is a simple change of scenery.

Lastly, per the usual, it’s all iPhone. This is a repost from last spring, because IG took it down a week after I posted it, and I didn’t think to reupload until now.
