We are delighted to present Bella Rune’s third solo exhibition at the gallery. ’Planet’ features new works that criss-cross between two and three dimensions in sculptures, objects and works on paper.

The exhibition title itself suggests an ambiguity that is characteristic of Bella Rune’s artistic practice (The word Planet can mean either planet, airplane or surface in Swedish). She utilises the everyday, the tangible and the fundamental to aim for something expansive and grand. In her most recent works, she has taken an interest in simple machines: basic mechanical devices that alter the direction or magnitude of a force to make work easier. The classic examples are the lever, the inclined plane, the wedge, the screw, the wheel and axle, and the pulley.

Bella Rune’s exhibition ’Allt kött är hö’ (All Flesh is Grass) opens on Saturday March 14 in Hedvig Eleonora Kyrka in Stockholm. Reception at 6 pm with a conversation between artist Bella Rune and vicar Sven Milltoft at 6.30 pm. Free admission.

The exhibition ’Allt kött är hö’ (All Flesh is Grass) consists of a series of sculptures in dialogue with the interior of Hedvig Eleonora Church. Works of thread and wood, in delicate balance, temporary tension and earthbound heaviness, reinforce the transience and impermanence of the human experience. Materiality is shifted and transformed in an existence characterised by the digital.

What is heavy and light? What is a body? What does transience look like today?

Although the sculptures are analogue and materially tangible, they raise questions about our perception and how we categorise and sort the world in which we are both immaterial and mortal. The sculptures are more activity than objects; they serve to reinforce the situation in which they are included, but where people in the place, the architecture of the room and memory also play a role. The sculptures aim to be a mental adhesive or plaster that does something with the relationship between body and architecture, between history and the present, between modernism and tradition, acting somewhere between the loom and the weave. In a way, thread is one of the world’s original technologies, which, when we cracked its code, created endless possibilities in all areas of life. The thread has looked the same (probably since Neanderthal times) and it is ingenious, stronger than concrete and bronze, it does not break but bounces back elastically and holds the world together with its tensile strength, forming both fabric and bridges.

Bella Rune is one of the artists in the the exhibition ’Formes Ouvertes’ @institutsuedois in Paris, France. The exhibition presents nearly thirty years of work by painter and sculptor Olle Bærtling (1911–1981), an iconic figure of abstraction, in dialogue with the works of seven international artists: Cécile Bart, Rana Begum, Ulla von Brandenburg, Jacob Dahlgren, Bernd Ribbeck, Bella Rune and Brooklin A. Soumahoro. Through very different approaches and mediums, they are revitalising geometric abstract art and exploring its relevance today.

’Formes Ouvertes’ is part of a series of exhibitions at the Institut suédois highlighting artists who were pioneers in their time, in dialogue with contemporary creators. Curators: Marion Alluchon and Marjolaine Lévy. It is on view 20.2–19.7 2026.
