American Wasteland x @ourherobalthazar *
RP.1 and Base 36 present American Wasteland — a new exhibition by Jet Le Parti and L.S. Toy, opening March 28, in direct conversation with the New York theatrical premiere of Our Hero, Balthazar, the directorial debut of Oscar Boyson (Uncut Gems, Good Time, Frances Ha), starring Jaeden Martell, Asa Butterfield, and Noah Centineo.
The exhibition works across painting, print, sculpture, sound, and writing — not as a survey of mediums but as a single sustained inquiry. Le Parti and Toy approach the same terrain from opposite positions: Le Parti from the interior of systemic American stressors, Toy from its macroscopic extension westward. Together they map what the culture deposits in bodies, buildings, and images when its foundational myths stop holding.
Boyson’s film arrives at the same coordinates through cinematic form. Written by Boyson and Ricky Camilleri, Our Hero, Balthazar follows a wealthy New York teenager who manufactures emotional gun-control content to impress a crush, then travels to Texas to confront an online troll he believes is a potential school shooter — a dark comedy about performance, fake empathy, and the violence latent in digital virtue. The film stars Jaeden Martell, Asa Butterfield, Chris Bauer, Jennifer Ehle, Anna Baryshnikov, Noah Centineo, Becky Ann Baker, Avan Jogia, and Pippa Knowles.
The film has been tracking the same fracture lines as this exhibition independently. Neither work illustrates the other. They are in genuine, unreduced conversation, made more precise by being held alongside one another.
The evening of March 28 brings these works into proximity. Our Hero, Balthazar screens at Regal Union Square ahead of the opening. The exhibition opens at RP.1 in Brooklyn. Cast members and production will be present across the evening for conversation - not as programming, but as a continuation of the dialogue the works themselves have already opened.
Attendance is strictly curated. Capacity is limited.
Open Bar. 21+
RSVP via the link in bio — logistics and details will be shared with selected guests directly.
