BACKHAUS PROJECTS
An arts/culture project space hosting exhibitions, pop-ups, workshops & more from our home in Neukölln, Berlin

Lose Hope by @natalialisinicchia
18.05 - 20.05
18h - 22h
The show situates itself at the threshold between the loss of creative impulse and its reconfiguration. 'Lose Hope' is not understood as an ending, but as a silence that opens a space of suspension from which new forms of connection with inspiration emerge
After more than a decade of artistic practice, the work shifts towards a more intuitive pictorial language, where gesture, atmosphere, and instability acquire centrality
The exhibition is accompanied by performances by:
Crisálida (@tillmembrillo) - flamenco noise
Claudia iglesias (@claudiaiglesiasp) - performance
Parallel processing (@parallelprocessing) - experimental music expanding the field of research into sound and performative practices

L'Origine du Monde by @pitypartyrecordcollective
15.05: 16h - 21h
16.05: 16h - 21h
Performances on both nights at 19h
In 1866, a work of art began a long and secretive journey from Paris around the world, finally becoming available for public viewing for the first time in Brooklyn, New York in 1988, more than a decade after it was painted. Gustav Courbet’s L’Origine du Monde, a cropped painting of a woman’s vulva and bust, was the source of controversy and excitement, concealed behind fake fronts, hidden doors and secret rooms. Today, Pity Party Collective’s curating branch, Pity Arty, revisit the work’s title and subject matter, bringing creation and femininity into full view in a multimedia, comprehensive exhibition of the same name
Femininity is a force. It is non-specific and non-gendered in essence. It moves through matter, memory, and nature in a system of dualities: it nurtures and liberates; is determined and accommodating; commanding and kind; strong and delicate. Femininity lives in the physical as cyclical intelligence and a rhythm of expansion, contraction, and renewal - and extends beyond into the intuitive and unseen. Femininity is the source of life: L’Origine du Monde
In a moment that for many feels scary and semi-apocalyptic, we seek a return to essence and creation - to the “origin of the world” - looking at the positive vigour of femininity in stark contrast to the toxic landscape of aggression, war and ‘manospheres’
This exhibition brings together artists who engage with feminine energy: not to define it, but to liberate it and allow its free expression. Through the works of 5 local, multi-media artists, Pity Arty looks at 4 themes of femininity: creation, nurturing, growth and strength through a variety of powerful works in dialogue with each other and the world at large

In this exhibition, the already infinitely photographed generation is portrayed with curiosity by someone who is a part of it. The photographer explores the new desires of an overstimulated and saturated post-pandemic generation, offering personal insights into the closest bonds and moments of being
Her work powerfully illustrates just how genuine and intense connections between people can be, despite of technology being around, and how they are in an urgent rise. This quest for closeness also coexists with an uncertainty and a lack of control over the future this generation is facing. These photographs are a call to a hopeless present; because when the future is uncertain but we have each other, nothing else matters

This installation explores memories through sound and image. It presents a collection of personal MiniDV footage displayed on screens, combined with sounds taken from different footage and memories. The audio does not match the image; what is heard belongs to another time or place, allowing new connections and meanings to emerge
The work explores how the dissonance between displaced audio and analogue-textured image reflects the instability of memory. By collecting and reworking tape footage, the artistic process approaches resampling fragments of a life
Memory is not linear but scattered and constantly remoulded, like a collage where fragments contradict or blur between reality and imagination
