We were honored to partner with Farmata Dia @farmy_ and Babacar Thiaw @babscopa —two dedicated community builders who are bringing surf and skate culture to the youth of Dakar, Senegal.

‘It comes down to our morals as humans. What’s important to us nowadays? We’ve all received education and values from our parents, but everyone’s just chasing the check and forgetting essential values. One day, the check will bury us.’

Surfer, environmental advocate, and community leader Babacar Thiaw takes us inside Senegal’s fight to protect its ocean, people, legacy, and future.

In our next edition of Climate × Sports, we sit down with Babacar to explore how his connection to the sea has evolved into a movement for marine conservation, youth education, and community initiatives that aim to reshape how people engage with the environment.

As the founder of Senegal’s first zero-waste restaurant and surf camp — now inspiring 38 other zero-waste restaurants across Dakar — and of the Surfrider Foundation Senegal, Babacar stands at the forefront of grassroots environmental action and community empowerment.

In our conversation, we dive into the challenges Senegal faces: pollution, waste colonialism, overfishing, climate change, and migration — and what it means to fight for your home and future generations in a rapidly changing world.

At the heart of it all is the ocean: as legacy, as livelihood, as a place of joy and recreation — and as the centre of community life.
