On the occasion of the exhibition Future of Nostalgia, presented as part of @artweektokyo and organized by @artsalula in collaboration with the French Agency for AlUla Development (AFALULA @horizonalula), curated by @arnaud__morand and @ali.alghazzawi, Théo Mercier’s sand installation LANDSCRIPT, produced in situ, reveals familiar, everyday forms sculpted with disarming precision. Yet within this material clarity, subtle glitches betray an inherent instability. Over the duration of the exhibition the pieces shift, settle, and erode, as if caught mid-transformation: not ruins commemorating a finished past, but forms actively becoming ruins.

ضمن معرض مستقبل الحنين، المُقام في إطار @artweektokyo والمنظّم من قبل @artsalula بالتعاون مع الوكالة الفرنسية لتطوير العلا (AFALULA @horizonalula)، وبإشراف القيّمين @arnaud__morand و@ali.alghazzawi، يقدّم ثيو ميرسييه عمله التركيبي نقش الأرض، وهو تركيب رملي أُنجز في الموقع استناداً إلى بحث أُجري في @villahegra.

تستحضر مكوّنات العمل أشكالاً مألوفة من تفاصيل الحياة اليومية. إلا أن هذه الدقّة تحمل في طيّاتها إشارات خفية إلى هشاشة كامنة. ومع امتداد فترة العرض، تتبدّل ملامح العمل تدريجياً, تتحرّك، تستقر، وتتآكل في حالة تحوّل مستمر هنا، لا يُستعاد الماضي بوصفه أثراً مكتملًا، بل يتشكّل كحالة متجددة، حيث تتقاطع المادة مع الزمن والذاكرة.

The design brings together three distinct layers — a polished gold-plated top, a sleek silver centre, and a richly textured lower layer — creating a composition that feels both sculptural and refined.

The contrast between smooth and detailed surfaces echoes the rhythm of light across the landscape, expressing a contemporary approach to material and craft.

وبهذه المناسبة، سيُقام معرض يسلّط الضوء على ثراء مبادرات التصميم التي تم تطويرها في العلا، من خلال جمع برامج الإقامات الفنية، والجوائز، وإحياء الحرف التقليدية، والمبادرات الموجّهة إلى الجمهور الواسع. ويجمع هذا التعاون مؤسسات تؤمن بالدور الثقافي والتحويلي للتصميم.

📢 @artsalula, @designspacealula and the French Agency for AlUla Development @horizonalula are partnering with the @institutdumondearabe to support the 4th edition of the “Institut du monde arabe Design Prize 2026”. 

On this occasion, they will present an exhibition highlighting the richness of the design initiatives developed in AlUla. This partnership brings together institutions deeply committed to the cultural and transformative power of design.

Born in AlUla. Shaped by its people.

This collection is the result of a year-long collaboration between the artisans of Madrasat Addeera and HINDAMME designer Mohammed Khoja, where 7000 years of heritage is not preserved, but reimagined.

Inspired by AlUla’s ancient petroglyphs, landscapes and living traditions, each piece carries the imprint of the hands that made it. From block printing to embroidery, every detail reflects the skill, patience and creativity of a new generation of artisans.

More than a collection, this is a story of craft, collaboration and community. A reflection of how Madrasat Addeera continues to evolve as a platform for heritage-led creativity, supporting local talent and shaping AlUla’s cultural future.

ثمرة تعاون امتد لعام كامل بين حرفييّ مدرسة الديرة ومصمم HINDAMME محمد خوجة، حيث يُعاد تقديم إرث العلا الممتد لآلاف السنين برؤية معاصرة تحتفي بالحرفة والإبداع المحلي.

استُلهمت التصاميم من النقوش الصخرية القديمة في العلا، ومناظرها الطبيعية وتقاليدها الحية، لتحمل كل قطعة أثر الأيدي التي صنعتها. من الطباعة اليدوية إلى التطريز، تعكس كل تفصيلة مهارة وصبراً وإبداعاً لجيل جديد من الحرفيين.

أكثر من مجرد مجموعة، فهي حكاية عن الحرفة والتعاون والمجتمع، وتجسيد لكيف تواصل مدرسة الديرة تطورها كمنصة للإبداع المستلهم من التراث، دعماً للمواهب المحلية وإسهاماً في المشهد الثقافي المتجدد في العلا.
