Coming in 10 days: Columbia DSL’s annual Breakthroughs in Storytelling Awards, presented live online. Space is limited; RSVP now at https://luma.com/2b40hg0r

Last year one of the 12 winners was “Grand Theft Hamlet,” in which Shakespeare’s bloody tragedy was staged inside one of the bloodiest games in video game history. Who will it be this year? Hint: A lot of them involve AI. Maybe most of them. They come from the US, the UK, Germany and other places as well. They were created by people who are male, female or nonbinary. None of them were created by AI. Join us Sunday evening April 26 to find out more.

In Frank Rose’s upcoming course, Strategic Storytelling, you’ll learn why some brands become movements—and others disappear.

Warby Parker didn’t grow by outspending competitors on ads. It grew by building a narrative platform—one that invited people to step inside the story. From a simple origin tale to a school bus turned into a traveling experience, every choice reinforced the same idea: this wasn’t just a product. It was a way of life.

That’s the power of narrative platforms and immersion. They don’t just tell stories—they connect people to them, and to each other, in ways that last.

If you want to learn how to design stories that create meaning, loyalty, and momentum across platforms, join Strategic Storytelling—a live online course led by Frank Rose, author of The Sea We Swim In and The Art of Immersion.

In Frank Rose’s upcoming course, “Strategic Storytelling,” you’ll learn that great stories are built on journey, not spectacle.

Pulp Fiction isn’t remembered because it breaks the rules of storytelling—it’s remembered because it understands them. By reshaping narrative order, Quentin Tarantino takes the audience on a journey that turns chaos into clarity and violence into moral consequence.

That’s the power of journey: deciding what to reveal, when to reveal it, and what to hold back.

If you want to learn how to design stories that resonate, persuade, and stay with people long after the moment has passed, join “Strategic Storytelling”—a live online course led by Frank Rose, author of The Sea We Swim In and The Art of Immersion.

Congratulations to digital studio @onassis.onx, which moved into its new home in downtown Manhattan last week and celebrated by throwing open the doors for Techne: Homecoming, an exhibition that seeks to trace the biological, mythological and digital bonds that give rise to identity and kinship.
1,2. Andrew Thomas Huang’s “The Deer of Nine Colors,” a film and sculpture installation inspired by an ancient Buddhist folktale. In this sci-fi retelling, a trans woman achieves bliss when she retraces her past life as a wild deer and embraces her true name.
3,4. “Memos,” by Natalia Manta and Aias Kokkalis, an installation designed to commemorate the “inconsequential creatures” present at the death of Julius Caesar and other historical events.
5. New York program director Jazia Hammoudi and innovation director John Fitzgerald, whose film “The Vivid Unknown” was a highlight of the first Techne exhibition, held last year at BAM.

Ten days in California:
1) The Bradbury Building, downtown Los Angeles. Inspired by the 1888 time-travel novel “Looking Backward.” Built for mining magnate Lewis Bradbury in 1893. Replicant body shop in 2019. Home of the Berggruen Institute in 2025. #bladerunner
2) Huntington Gardens, San Marino. The desert garden.
3) Palms in Ojai.
4) The Transamerica Pyramid, downtown San Francisco. The city's most-hated building when it went up in 1972. Now an icon.
5) Max Ernst, “Masque aux yeux ronds,” part of an exhibition of Ernst sculptures from 1938-39 in Transamerica’s Redwood Park.
6) Wayne Thiebaud, “Paint Cans” (1990), Legion of Honor, San Francisco.
7) In the Presidio.

A self-typing typewriter that connects you to the writings of James Baldwin, one of the most incisive critics of American society in the 20th century? And uses #AI to do it? Too good to resist.

This installation, created by @kinfolktech in collaboration with creative studio Innergalactic, Baldwin scholar @frankleonroberts and the Baldwin estate, is timely, innovative and compelling. Up through this coming Sunday Nov 2. Follow the link in my bio to read my review in the New York Times. All photos by Jonah Rosenberg (@jone_bone) for the Times

"Fairyland," based on Alysia Abbott's memoir about being brought up by a gay dad in 1980s San Francisco, will be in theaters this Friday October 10. It's a wonderful film, warm and human, about love that crosses boundaries and seeks out freedom and surpasses conflict in the time of AIDS. Produced by Sofia Coppola, directed by Andrew Durham, with Emilia Jones as Alysia, Scoot McNairy as Alysia's dad and Geena Davis as Alysia's grandmother. Please don't miss it.

Alysia and her husband Jeff Howe—a former colleague from Wired—were in town this past weekend for screenings at the Village East. Alysia—shown here with Ada Calhoun, also a product of a Bohemian childhood—talked with audiences about the film, and then we threw a cocktail party for 30. Honored to be a friend.

"Thaddeus Mosley: Touching the Earth" is an exhibition of bronzes by the 98-year-old sculptor, on view in City Hall Park through Nov. 16. I love the way these bronzes, cast from Mosley's signature wood sculptures, resonate with the the park's trees and its surrounding stone buildings. The show's title is taken from an essay by the queer black writer bell hooks. Catch it if you can.

1. "Gate III," 2022. In the background, through the trees: New York's 1812 City Hall; architect Cass Gilbert's 1936 US courthouse, now named for Thurgood Marshall; McKim, Mead & White's 1914 Municipal Building.

2. "Geometric Plateau," 2020. In the background, beyond the fountain, is 195 Broadway, built of Vermont granite as the headquarters of AT&T in 1916.

3. "Southwestern Suite," 2023. The granite-and-bronze fountain in the background in all three of these photos was first installed in the park in 1871.
