An interview with Gordon Hack about his piece Ancestral Load Balancer (†ENSHROUDED), one of the artworks exhibited by Meadow at DIGITALISM at @britishartfair
The artwork is covered in a veil, with the painting behind revealed through augmented reality. See this work and a range of other great AR artworks and other digital art at the top floor of the Saatchi galleri.
”Image value is being eroded by network forces and artificial intelligence. That’s why I’ve opted to cover up this painting and instead make it viewable only in augmented reality. Viewing it in this way allows you to experience it in a way that is more true to the form of the networked image itself.”

My piece Ancestral Load Balancer (†ENSHROUDED) in the recent show 1,2,3, Alt! with @sitnalta_2702 at @hyphastudios. Thank you to @meadow.space for the fantastic augmented reality platform.
Acrylic on canvas, 100 x 120 cm, muslin shroud, found lenticular image, augmented reality reconstruction.
Lying at the intersection of science and network spirituality, Ancestral Load Balancer (†ENSHROUDED) questions the purpose of the painted image in an age of image ubiquity. Composed of erratically layered clip art images, obscure terms and network diagrams, ALB (†E) is a difficult image to look at; it’s also difficult to view.
While the painting lies enshrouded, only its fragmented components can be viewed through augmented reality. Thus, the sanctified image remains protected in an age where image value is rapidly eroding due to networked distribution and artificial intelligence.

Introducing Gordon Hack (b. 1991, Glasgow, UK) @arcggd
Gordon Hack is an advocate for Total Cross-Functional Industrial Systems Transformation (TCFIST) and is in it for the long haul. His work represents a research programme into emerging theories of value- and meaning-creation at the intersection of supermarket aesthetics and contemporary spirituality.
Gordon developed his painting practice while completing a PhD in biochemistry at the Technische Universität München. He treats image-making as an unstable, nonlinear process and is partial to painting most days.
Artworks:
1. Grapheme I, 2025. Spray paint & acrylic on panel, 41 x 51 cm
2. Untitled (Party), 2025. Acrylic on panel, 41 x 51 cm
3. Zombie Painting, 2025. Oil and acrylic on canvas, 60 x 80 cm
4. The Non-Erotics of Advertising (Hypercare), 2025. Spray paint, acrylic and UV print on panel, 41 x 51 cm
