Throwback to a year ago when I created fictional artefacts as tactile accompaniments to an audio mystery. 3D printed a mold for a Gumboot Chiton, biomaterials of agar and wood chip dyed with spices. Inset a scrap circuit board and attached washed-ashore seaweed. Placed inside "specimen-bag" to perform as a future metal detector's mystery find on Brighton Beach in the year 2098. @glitteringprospects

Excited I'll be running a sound walk-shop at the Gentler Futures festival by @bytheendofmay on June 6th in Lisbon. Participants will explore the less-noticed ecosystem relationships in the city through listening to the soil, water and trees around us. Looking forward to meet you there! 🐜🌱🌊

Been experimenting with natural dyes this week. Got unbleached cotton fabric from the @thescrapspace, nettles from the park, red onion and red cabbage. Just found the method on Wikihow. The far left colours came from the red cabbage. Green = red cabbage + bicarbonate soda. Middle beige/pink is nettle which didn't turn out as strong as I expected. Two on the far right is red onion + bicarbonate. 🌿🍠🧅 Lots of smells!#untameable

This week, we at the ‘Interspecies Research Group’ are celebrating the launch of the catalogue for our Interspecies exhibition at MAC/CCB (@macccb.museu ), curated by Mariana Pestana @m.pestana who also edited the book, coordinated by Diogo Montenegro (@montno_r ), and beautifully designed by Joana Lourencinho Carneiro (@joana_lourencinho_carneiro).

Through a ‘nominations’ method, we had the opportunity to co-curate and collaborate on selecting the works, and even contribute our own pieces. I was responsible for selecting works that showcased the remarkable versatility and potential of biomaterials, while honouring the living and once-living beings from which the exhibited matter originated. This included pieces by @m_a_c_h_e_i_a , Fahrenheit 180 (@jeymorris and @lucacarlisle_ ), and @biolablisboa , which supported the execution of these pieces. A few words about the book:
What can architecture tell us about the transition from a humanist world to a new posthuman paradigm? And, on the other hand, what does posthumanism reveal about the architecture we create? This book documents a research process surrounding these questions and suggests a hypothesis for reflecting on them. It argues that we are witnessing a new Romanticism, a spirit of work and critical stance that recognizes the interdependencies between people, animals, celestial bodies, technologies, and minerals, among others, and all the parts that constitute the cosmos, and that this spirit is articulated in an interspecies practice.

Took 54 architecture students on a 'MtH soundwalk' yesterday along the River Lea through Fish Island over to Victoria Park. We were lucky with the sun. I had prepared a paper map with pre-recordings and videos so they could listen from underwater, inside trees, soil and built materials along the way.
When we got to Hertford Union Canal Top Lock, I threw in the Aquarian hydrophone so those who wanted could listen "live" to underwater sounds. A small group gathered, and I handed over the headphones and told them about what the water is doing and where the water comes from, and what it might want. And the limited hearing range of the Northern Pike. And barge motors. The water of the lock was deep and dirty.
All of a sudden a narrowboat sneaked up behind me in the lock. I excitedly asked the students listening in if they could hear the motor as it was quite quiet through the air. They could. I pressed record. A low hum started layering along the water sounds. I was worries the barge was gonna go over the mic, but it stopped just before where I had thrown it in. The skipper disembarked and started winding the old mechanics that opens the lock gate right where we were standing. More students came over and wanted to listen to what was going on.
The water started rushing through the gate and the water level and the boat fell dramatically. The diesel engine was still going.
As the boat started moving forwards, I quickly pulled the hydromic up just in time for the boat to pass by. The water around the mic was oily and my hands smelled of diesel for hours after. I wonder how the Northern Pikes cope with it all. 🐟🐟🐟

The frustration of learning as an adult. Cables got alot more entangled than this. 4 mics. Longing for a tidier workflow . But this seems like an inevitably messessary step in the process. #MtHlistening #tanglefairy

In sound-research news: I tested my new MixPre 6 with some ultrasonic microphones I borrowed from @soundellie - the LOM Uši Pro and a LOM MikroUši with a mini-cone. I randomly also tested my DPA4060 next to them for the famous 'key rattle' ultrasonic mic test, and it turns out my DPA4060 captures freqs. higher than the Uši Pro. Looks like I had an ultrasonic mic all along 😂
The MikroUši and its little cone beats both tho, looking at the spectrogram, as the cone directionality does help a lot at these high freq. levels. 🎤
Slowed-down, a bunch of keys rattling sounds just like church bells. I guess metal's gonna metal.

I was one of the winners at tonight's Chalk Grassland Bingo hosted at the end of @sussexwildlifetrust talk about the Changing Chalk Partnership which is coming to the end of its 4-year funding programme that has achieved some amazing things on the chalk downland 🦋🦗☘️🌱🐍
I chose an UV light torch to see if I can capture any photos of neon sea creatures in the rock pools later in the year. 🔦🦐🪸
