When the Norwegian producer of functional sculptures @nedrefoss is celebrating 10 years, the history goes back to when the two founders, Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll who's also running @anderssenvoll, was deep in the renovation of @nedrefossgaard
The two designers had actually decided not to move into manufacturing, but then one day they had a sketch ready of a candlestick that looked like a rooster. Perhaps it could become a souvenir for the restaurant?
- In our work to rehabilitate the historic Nedre Foss, we learned to appreciate S-curves, marble and ornamentation. This had an impact on the modernist background we had acquired during our studies. Suddenly, the form itself became interesting. It no longer had to be explained through functionality," says Torbjørn Andresen.
They produced 300 pieces of Ildhane in Poland but were shocked over the sheer volume of it all wheh the pallet arrived at the office. With a candlestick in hand, they ran to various retailers they knew and asked if they would take in a minimum of 24 pieces.
10 years later nearly 45000 Ildhane candlesticks have been sold internationally, and 14 new functional sculptures have been added to the collection.
"We say that Nedre Foss products should last for over 100 years, and just to be clear, the products are made to be displayed. If it's going to end up in a drawer, it doesn't belong in the collection," says Espen Voll.
The two new objects are Rabarbra and Anker. Four new once coming up in 2026.

Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll are celebrating the 10th anniversary of their Norwegian production company @nedrefoss as a sideprosjekt to their design studio @anderssenvoll
It all started with the design of the Ildhane candlestick as a souvenir for the @nedrefossgaard back in 2015. The candlestick unexpectedly became a bestseller.
"We have used Ildhane to develop a set of design principles that have been applied to all subsequent Nedre Foss products. They must be made from natural materials and have a cohesive form. We call them 'functional sculptures', objects that are as useful as they are beautiful," says Torbjørn.
"We look for classic categories and take a hundred-year perspective, which is why we also call them 'hundred-year products'," adds Espen.
To mark the anniversary, they decided to realise two designs they had had lying in a drawer.
"The Anker candlestick is cast from 5 kilograms of recycled Swedish iron. Cast iron is very important to us. There is something beautiful about melting old scrap into new beauty," explains Torbjørn.
- Rabarbra is a vase made of solid-coloured glass. The body is blown, while the disc is pressed. The parts are assembled while they are still hot and fluid. It's like a dance, says Espen, who reveals that four new products from external designers will be launched in 2026.

"We have used Ildhane to develop a set of design principles that have been applied to all subsequent Nedre Foss products. They must be made from natural materials and have a cohesive form. We call them 'functional sculptures', objects that are as useful as they are beautiful," says Torbjørn.
"We look for classic categories and take a hundred-year perspective, which is why we also call them 'hundred-year products'," adds Espen.
To mark the anniversary, they decided to realise two designs they had had lying in a drawer.
"The Anker candlestick is cast from 5 kilograms of recycled Swedish iron. Cast iron is very important to us. There is something beautiful about melting old scrap into new beauty," explains Torbjørn.
- Rabarbra is a vase made of solid-coloured glass. The body is blown, while the disc is pressed. The parts are assembled while they are still hot and fluid. It's like a dance, says Espen, who reveals that four new products from external designers will be launched in 2026.

Who's behind the curtain?
Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll are celebrating the 10th anniversary of their Norwegian production company @nedrefoss as a sideprosjekt to their design studio @anderssenvoll
It all started with the design of the Ildhane candlestick as a souvenir for the @nedrefossgaard back in 2015. The candlestick unexpectedly became a bestseller.
