Creative Description: This piece is a collaboration of two different voices who were raised in west Phoenix. We want to share our life and our culture through movement. The heart of this piece is the props we will be placing on stage, each holding a significance to us and our culture. We will be displaying who we think we are, what cultural aspects we feel we’re missing, and our stories as Mexican-Americans. With the hate being spread and the constant appropriation of our Latinx culture, we want to pay homage to where we come from because although some may be ashamed or view it as “ghetto”, we’re proud of the community we grew up in and the ancestors we’re connected to.
Bio: Anahi Jimenez and Rose-Angel Ramirez are both Latinx dance artists born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. Having grown up in the same neighborhood but never connecting until college, these two have been inseparable since. Both Artists graduated from Glendale Community College and Southern Utah University, earning their Bachelor of Science in Dance in 2022. There they’ve gathered the necessary knowledge and growth they needed to challenge the status quo and are often intrigued when given the opportunity to explore the unique and non-traditional aspects of dance artistry. They are constantly working to push the definition of dance to the general public and show that anything can be dance; despite what society has deemed digestible, no beautiful high leg extension required.

Anahi is a Latinx Arizona native dance artist and choreographer. She has received her Bachelor of Science in Dance from Southern Utah University and her Associate in Fine Arts Dance from Glendale Community College. She has had the pleasure to learn from and work with artists like Jenny Gerena, Nicholas Blaylock, Danielle Lydia Sheather, and many more. She has trained in classic styles like modern, jazz and ballet, but is often more intrigued by the choreographic process. Anahi is often interested in finding ways to explore dance from a pedestrian and theatrical point of view; looking for ways to push the boundaries often placed in dance. Anahi has been a member of DEPTH Dance since 2022 and is excited to continue this new journey with the company.
