“ I Heard the Voice” @hydeparkartcenter January 2026
+ a lil behind the scenes from my living room studio!
In this performance I embodied a spirit named Somebody, inspired by MLK’s “Life’s Blueprint” speech. Somebody was hung on a plantation in the Delta, went to heaven, and found out The King was on his way up there too. So he decided to cross back over and follow The King up north to the West Side of Chicago. Somebody spent his time out west with the Vice Lords, contemplating his stance on violence and nonviolence, making his final choice by the time the 1968 riots broke out following The King’s assassination.
At the bottom of Somebody’s pure whites, is a mixture of broken mirror glass, plastics, and shards of glass bottles I found on my walks around my home out west. I wanted Somebody to glisten in the light of the projection, just like how the West Side still does. The rest of the pics are a few test runs of me rehearsing, filling my house with smoke and playing with the whip
The soundscape playing on the first picture was created and edited by me using audio clips from various MLK speeches and found media/sound effects. You can listen to the full version of RIOT on my website, along with source credits!
If you were there to witness, I hope you left wit some hope on you. and if you didn’t have the chance to see, I hope I get to see you next time 🫶🏾 thank you @colectivomultipolar for the wonderful pictures!!
