Alina Frieske

A look back at the section of the exhibition “Pour tout faire, il faut une fleur” dedicated to the work of Alina Frieske.
The artist combines collage, found images, and digital constructions. Her practice highlights human gesture and direct intervention, contrasting with the anonymity of digital environments.
In the exhibition, a collage composed of fragments of test pages and paper cutouts offers the public a glimpse into the artist’s creative process, while the reverse side of the wall presents a more abstract vision of the elements, where the cutouts appear inverted and transformed into abstract forms.
Three “unfinished” works complement this approach, highlighting the importance of preparatory work and initial gestures.

Grateful to exhibit in the current group show ‘I Need More Time’ at Arter Museum Istanbul with my work ‘Rehearsing’ (presented back-to-back for the first time)
Alongside works by:
Arda Asena,
Ruth van Beek,
Szilvia Bolla,
Rachelle Bussières,
Antony Cairns,
Orhan Cem Çetin,
Görkem Ergün,
Ege Kanar,
Şahin Kaygun,
Lebohang Kganye,
Dionne Lee,
Alix Marie,
Rehan Miskci,
Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs,
Ayako Sakuragi,
Dafna Talmor,
Rodrigo Valenzuela
Drawing on the new forms and potentials of lens-based practices, the exhibition proposes a polyphonic approach that resists rapid production cycles, fixed representational norms, and technical determinism. The works on view reveal the gestures embedded in their production processes, the tools employed, as well as the possible transformations occurring across surface and time, thus opening up photography to critical inquiry not only as a representational medium but also in its material and conceptual dimensions.

Opening today at Makasiini Contemporary!
Counterweights
The glitchy, surreal images in the work of Alina Frieske (b. 1994) constantly evade resolution. Her ethereal scenes of bodies and still lifes cohere and then fall apart, abstracted by an element that reads at once as refracted light and pixilation. Everywhere there are familiar suggestions of context, but upon closer inspection, dimension itself is off, uncanny. The German artist’s practice intersects methodologies from painting, photography, and assemblage, and her subject is the fraught space between our public and private selves, and the way representation plays out in our intensely networked virtual reality.
