Hamburg has millions of people. Many of them live close together, but why is there a lack of connection?

SV Blankenese is a sports club in Hamburg. We stepped inside, we quickly found that it was a place where people know your name and show up for you.

I sat down with Jörg Riccius, Allianz Agent and lifelong connector of people, and Jörg von Appen, Chairman of SV Blankenese, to understand what actually builds community and why so many of us are missing it.

We found that belonging isn’t accidental. Someone has to build it, protect it, and keep showing up. And in a city where millions pass each other by every day, that matters more than ever.

On February 6, 2023, two catastrophic earthquakes struck Turkey and Syria, destroying lives and displacing millions overnight.

For countless children, the ground didn’t just shake. Their entire world collapsed.

I sat down with Sibel Hür, Director of Communications, Citizenship & Sustainability at Allianz Turkey, and Figen Samuray, Chairman of the Koruncuk Foundation, to hear how they refused to let that be the end of the story.

Together, they moved fast by providing shelter, safety, and stability to young girls who had lost everything. But what they built went far beyond emergency relief. They created a home. A community. A future.

For Figen, success isn’t measured in beds filled or meals served. It’s the moment a child dares to dream again.

This is that story.

What does community in sports mean to you?🤝

The FC Bayern players @jonathantah, @alekspavlovic_ and @jonas.urbig answer this question by reflecting on their football experiences in their childhood that taught them the value of coming together.⚽🤩

Building stronger communities together 🤝

Over 1,000 young innovators from 110 countries joined the Allianz x @socialshifters MoveNow Global Social Innovation Challenge with bold ideas for social and environmental change.

Supported by 320+ Allianz volunteers, three outstanding founders were selected as main award winners:

🏆 MOVE SOCIETY – Terra.IO (Mexico): Empowering farmers with offline soil sensing for climate-resilient agriculture.
🏆 MOVE THE MIND – Finanz (Italy): Simplifying investing and financial literacy for Europe’s youth.
🏆 MOVE THE BODY – Circe (UK): Bridging gaps in mental health care with accessible, therapist-led group therapy.

Nine more founders were recognized for their innovation, impact, and potential to scale with runner-up awards.

A powerful reminder that real impact happens when ideas, people, and communities come together.

To all the winners, and to every young innovator who took part: congratulations we cannot wait to see the impact you'll make!

Recently, I sat down with Professor Barnie Choudhury to talk about polarisation, community cohesion, and the legacy of the Oldham riots 25 years later.

The main point that stayed with me:
People living in close spaces, but living entirely separate lives, can be vulnerable to fear and extreme ideologies about the people around them. This is especially dangerous when this fear is exploited.

But it also made me think about the bridgebuilders. People like Father Phil Sumner, who create spaces for dialogue and trust between communities that requirea middle ground for consistent cross cultural conversations.

Cohesion happens through a willingness to have conversations, leading to deeper empathy, and people who choose to bring others together.

Thanks @uncoveringdhara for helping film!

Welcome to Episode 2 of the Middle Ground - the series where we go beyond the data to explore the human experience behind communities, and capture what gives us a sense of belonging.

In this episode, we talk to Professor Barnie Choudhury award-winning journalist and lecturer in Broadcast and Multimedia Journalism to investigate the legacy of the Oldham riots and the communities that flourished from them.

In this episode, we ask and answer the question: In times of polarisation, what can we do to stay together when everything pulls us apart?

The Allianz Unity Awards have been honored in the category of Social Cohesion at the Deutscher PR-Preis 2026 🎉

The Deutscher PR-Preis is Germany’s long-standing PR award, recognizing communication projects that achieve impact through creative solutions. This year’s award ceremony will be held on the 27th of May. The Allianz Unity Awards will receive Bronze and remain shortlisted for Silver and Gold.

The Allianz Unity Awards are part of our Power of Unity program. They celebrate everyday heroes who use sport as a force for change, empathy and belonging. Welcome to Episode 1 of The Middle Ground - The series where we go beyond the data to explore the human experience behind communities, and capture what gives us a sense of belonging.

This series is created in close collaboration with @allianz.

Together, we’re exploring complex social questions, combining research with lived experience to uncover insights that matter.

In this episode, Katharina Utermöhl, Head of Thematic and Policy Research at@Allianz, introduces the Social Resilience Index and explains why socialresilience is a critical lens for understanding our world today.

Across the series, we examine connection, division, and belonging — and ask a central question: Can we find a middle ground?
