'London. Detroit. Birmingham. New York.’ So declared the cover of TronikHouse’s ‘Hardcore Techno’ EP back in 1991, a nod to these musical powerhouses. Still flying the flag for West Midlands futurism in 2025 is Rawtrachs, aka Brum’s own Anand Patel.
A prolific music maker, both solo and as part of Made2Faze and We Kill Culture, he runs his own labels Futurepast Zine (which sprang from a physical zine of the same name) and Alternative Architecture, and has appeared on the likes of WNCL Recordings, Defrostatica and Sydonia.
His ‘Machine Room’ EP unveils the workings of his sound, Detroit’s techno soul filtered through industrial-strength broken beats and tech-step’s sci-fi dystopianism.
‘Fail We May’ is deep, dubby and drummy, a melancholic moment of reverie whose title echoes part of the phrase that defined Andy Weatherall. Label bosses Escape Earth (aka BufoBufo and Joe Nonlocal) remix it, injecting a current of euphoria as breakbeats and bubbling acid lift it into sweatier realms.
‘Machine Room (PST Basement Mix)’ channels the spirit of hardcore and d&b into heavy duty bruk, its Reese-style bassline nodding to Saunderson as the beats recall the abstract rhythms of Nubian Minds. And closer ‘Not So Great Expectations’ is another hulking presence, relentlessly weighty sub and drums marching through a ghostly realm.
