Do you have a neurodivergent nervous system?
"regular habits" that we've normalized but are actual signs of nervous system dysregulation.
1. Checking your phone the moment you wake up.
Your nervous system is immediately scanning for threats or signals the moment it becomes aware.
2. Feeling uncomfortable in silence or boredom
Not trusting the 'empty space'. Something must be stimulating you in order for your nervous system to affirm that there is indeed a reason to stay alert.
3. Constantly multitasking
We have much more time in a day than we realize. A perceived chronic lack of time to finish tasks is often really an underlying dysfunctional performance pattern projecting itself to our surroundings.
4. Needing background noise to relax
Silence feels uncomfortable because your system isn’t used to settling on its own. You rely on external input to regulate what should be an internal state.
5. Scrolling your phone in bed every night
Not allowing yourself to wind down. You’re keeping your nervous system in a low-level activated state right before sleep.
6. Feeling guilty when you rest or do nothing
Your system has learned to associate stillness with a lack of safety or value. Rest doesn’t feel earned, it feels wrong.
7. Drinking caffeine just to feel baseline functional
You’re not boosting performance. You’re compensating for an already dysregulated baseline.
8. Feeling restless when conversations slow down
Pauses feel like tension instead of space. Your system is looking for stimulation to avoid that discomfort.
9. Eating meals while watching or scrolling
Even nourishment isn’t enough on its own anymore. Your system expects constant input alongside everything.
10. Having 10 tabs open in your brain at once
Your attention isn’t scattered by accident. It’s been trained to constantly anticipate the next input.
The good news is that given the right practices and habits, we get to rewire these patterns without willpower or discipline. When we resolve the issue at the root, the symptoms will wash away autonomously.
