The 53rd Annual CSULB Pow Wow at Puvungna
The Pow Wow takes place at Puvungna, the historic and sacred land of the Gabrielino/Tongva/Kizh and Acjachemen/Juaneño Tribes.
It serves as an expression of Native American sovereignty and an opportunity to educate the broader public about Indigenous culture and traditions. It originated as a way to unite Native American communities, to gather, celebrate life, and share traditional songs, drumming, dance, and regalia.

Public acts of extreme violence, like those seen in Minneapolis, raise urgent questions about the hidden abuses occurring behind closed doors particularly inside ICE detention centers.
“If we are seeing that sort of outward extreme violence in broad daylight in the streets of Minneapolis, imagine what people must be facing behind closed doors and behind bars in ICE detention centers.”
In 2025, at least 32 people died in ICE custody, the highest death toll in two decades, with fatalities tripling from previous years; six more deaths have already been reported this year.
Reports from multiple facilities describe inhumane conditions, including delayed or denied medical care, unsafe and unsanitary living environments, and hostility from medical staff.
Human rights groups link medical neglect to several deaths, especially in Texas.
These systemic failures are compounded by documented abuse, including a former ICE contractor in Louisiana who pleaded guilty to repeatedly sexually assaulting a detained Nicaraguan woman.
Together, these cases expose a pattern of neglect, violence, and impunity within ICE detention facilities.
