Building your own name in the shadow of a legend isn’t easy.

@adamayan_master reflects on what it was like developing his own identity while working under the roof of legendary mastering engineer Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering Studios. What started as a production engineer role in 1998 quickly evolved into becoming Bob’s assistant, then eventually opening his own mastering room at Gateway just a few years later.

But stepping out of that shadow didn’t happen overnight. Adam talks openly about having to intentionally carve his own lane, push for opportunities, and build a clientele through persistence, trust, and years of proving himself. There’s something really inspiring about hearing someone acknowledge that even with mentorship, success still has to be earned.

From carefully overseeing tape transfers at Sony to preserving the emotional integrity of the recordings, Adam explains the philosophy that guides his work, “do no harm.”

It’s not about changing the artist’s vision. It’s about using modern tools and experience to bring listeners even closer to what the artist always intended people to hear.
