ACMG
The Association of Canadian Mountain Guides is the voice for high standards of risk management & professional skiing, climbing, and hiking since 1963.

In 1966, the East Face of Mount Babel became the scene of one of North America’s first helicopter-assisted climber rescues.
The story includes cries for help, a message spelled out in toilet paper, improvised rescue systems, and a team of mountain people working at the edge of what was possible.
It also shows how deeply ACMG history is tied to the evolution of mountain rescue in Canada. Walter Perren helped establish the ACMG in 1963 and played a central role in the rescue. Brian Greenwood, one of the rescued climbers, was an ACMG founding member and led the first ACMG guides’ course in 1966. Bernie Schiesser, part of the rescue effort, later became an ACMG Mountain Guide and ACMG president.
Since the beginning, ACMG members have shaped mountain travel, instruction, guiding and rescue in Canada.
