My favorite movie of all time, the one burned into my soul, has always been Mulholland Drive. David Lynch wasn’t just my biggest inspiration, he was THE INSPIRATION. His way of seeing the world, warping it, twisting it into something entirely his own, has been the driving force behind everything I’ve ever done. Whether I’m painting, making music, or telling stories on film, Lynch is always there in the background, pushing me to dive straight into chaos.
I’ve never been a “rules” person. I hate them. They bore me. They’re cages. And that’s what I admired most about him, he didn’t just ignore the rules; he obliterated them, set them on fire, and turned the wreckage into something beautiful and terrifying.
When I think about how much my craft has been shaped by him, I remember the sleepless nights watching Eraserhead, studying it like a painting, letting its industrial sounds penetrate my head. Or the times I watched Twin Peaks obsessively, first in order, then out of order, then back in order again, driving myself insane as I witnessed a true artist at his peak. It wasn’t just inspiring; it was a challenge. Lynch showed me what originality looked like, and it forced me to stay true to myself, to my art, NO MATTER WHAT, without ever looking over my shoulder or copying anyone else. That’s what Lynch did to me.
Now he’s gone, and the world feels smaller. Way boring. There won’t be another Lynch film, and that sits heavy. But I’m grateful he was here. Grateful that his work exists. His legacy isn’t going anywhere, it’ll outlive all of us. His style isn’t just a memory. It’s a fire, a challenge, a reminder to keep creating, to push boundaries, and to embrace the madness.
So long, David. You’ll keep inspiring people like me, those who don’t fit the mold and never wanted to. Always.
