These last few months have been completely over the top… And there ain’t no rest for the weary! ❤️‍🔥

For @alexajesse and I @psychedelicscience included a piece in the @tribe13gallery; new branding, marketing strategy, booth design and fabrication for our client @psysonics.co; and The Sacred Fire, an interactive 12’ diameter faux fire at the heart of the Sacred Space Station created for PS25. It was a de-programmed space for ceremony, storytelling, song, and authentic connection.

Gathering around a tribal fire is ingrained in our fiber as humans. It is where our ancestors have communed since time immemorial to share wisdom through ceremony, song, and stories passed down from generation to generation. At its essence a sacred fire is our earliest form of shelter from the rugged wilderness; we are instinctively drawn to and captivated by it. In these spaces we understand that it is not the most charismatic personality that is given the limelight, but the voices of experience that are respected, and where wisdom is cherished above all else.

What a Herculean effort from an incredible crew; I count myself lucky to have worked alongside the @teatribeglobal by @oshananand, @naturedreamweaver, and so many others. I am especially grateful to have @xochicana create our directional altars that allowed participants to lay down offerings of sacred water and tobacco which we collected throughout the conference to burn afterwards in a safe location.

Now off to Colombia and Mexico for the summer 🫠

The Tribbles namesake comes from the famous Star Trek infestation of 1967 in which the Enterprise crew was left in a euphoric haze by these adorable creatures that reproduced at exponential rates and quickly over ran the ship. This song 😂

While conceiving of this series I was looking for a glimmer of hope (and a little comic relief) against the many overwhelming existential threats facing humanity. While we (humans) may have the intellect to develop technology, inhabit nearly every continent and climate on the planet, split the atom, and leave our own atmosphere; we suffer from something called cognitive dissonance. So far this affliction has allowed us warm our home beyond many major tipping points, exploit the planet and our fellow earthlings to our own glutinous whims, and divide ourselves into arbitrary nation states and tribal factions that give us each the excuse to annihilate one another and reap further havoc on our own(ly) life giving planet.

So yeah, things are looking a little bleak. But we also have another evolutionary advantage that could yet be our salvation, maybe... Humans have the ability to culturally evolve almost instantaneously. That is, we can change our collective minds.

You may be skeptical, and I don’t blame you. Our current plutocracy would subdivide us down into smaller and smaller factions all believing our own individual truths substantiated by our personally tailored social media feeds until we are all fist fighting our neighbors in the street. Some of us are already there... Yet we (occasionally) have the ability to see reason and let that influence how we move through the world, as long as those reasonable ideas can manage to sneak past our trauma protectors.

So this is where Tribbles come in. They are my humble prayer for an immediate course correction through the exponential replication of the one thing that could still save us from ourselves, a good idea.

Ervin’s Labyrinth is a 42” diameter by 6” deep undulating circular maze CNC’d out of foam with a plywood backing, epoxy hard coating, & mapped projections. It was originally conceived as I began my artist residency @themidwaysf / @themidwaygallery / @sanfranciscogallery . I wanted to make a three dimensional wall mounted sculpture that served as an acoustic panel and projection screen as a site specific nod to the music venue. Thanks to my old @cacollegeofarts classmate @timhp & @fireborntools for the CNC assist!

Concept: The maze has no entrance or exit, representing the complexity of human consciousness and the ego, and reflecting on the evolutionary path of the brain and the search for meaning. It illustrates the mind’s endless journey through self-awareness, where the tools we use—reason, intellect, and introspection—trap us within our own conceptual loops. The labyrinth’s form suggests the cyclical nature of existence, where the pursuit of understanding often reveals no clear resolution.

Inspired by both classical philosophy and contemporary metaphysics, this artwork weaves together ideas from thinkers such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Immanuel Kant, and Ervin Laszlo. Laszlo’s Akasha Paradigm—which posits that the universe is an interconnected field of information and consciousness—adds a modern dimension to this exploration of the mind. According to Laszlo, consciousness is not merely a byproduct of brain evolution, but a fundamental aspect of the cosmos, with the human brain serving as a receiver or conduit for this universal consciousness. This theory suggests that the mind is a participant in a broader, spiritual evolution, where the ego and self-awareness are steps toward understanding the deeper interconnectedness of all things.

Join artist in residence Sean Stillwell Studios (@_ssstudios_ ) at the San Francisco Gallery on Thursday, 7/11 from 6-9pm and learn AI prompting and image creation techniques to ideate concepts for a community art project. We will bring one concept into the default world on a large scale canvas to be fully realized as a collaborative community mural with projection and paint pens. BYO food/bev.
