Really fun music video with some of my favorite people. XTR, LTR, S16 Bolex. Double X 16mm at box speed + occasional red filter. Feels a bit absurd at times to purposefully shoot low frames rates and images that need to be shot and re-exposed two or more times days later to collage and superimpose in camera, when most music videos shoot 60fps to get as many seconds of footage as possible out of a single day. This was not that kind of video.

2023 reel—just a lot of cool stuff I like! Let’s shoot something. I’ll bring my funky little mirrors and lenses and filters and film.

Issue no. 31 with Andrew Skalak (@_skalak) is now available for order, you can pick it up at the link in bio ♡ All orders mail out end of month.

Andrew Skalak (@_skalak) (b. Davenport, Iowa) is a New York-based cinematographer and photographer. His work is rooted in film - motion picture to still, unwilling to surrender the concentration, techniques, and necessary discernment that produced the refined landscape of image which came to define the visuality of twentieth century American prosperity, and the language of the visual cultural document. As a working documentary and narrative cinematographer, photography serves as a counterpoint to the hectic apparatus of film production, and a reprieve from the disarming ease and perfection of digital workflows. Instead of seeking to hold the world still and fabricate fictional narratives, Skalak uses the road to discover sites, juxtapositions and subjects with their own latent narratives.
Raised along the Mississippi River, always drawn to the arteries of the global economy, the artist maps larger systems throughout these regions including energetic flows, water development, and patterns of utopian religious settlement, while surveying the industrial expansion and contraction from the Mississippi watershed to the oil fields of the Permian Basin.
Skalak’s projects have screened at Doc NYC, Chicago International Film Festival, A Century of 16mm, and Seattle International Film Festival, among others. In 2025 he was selected to attend the Carrizozo artist residency program in Carrizozo, New Mexico.

Evel Knievel's launch ramp
Twin Falls, Idaho
August 2025
On September 8, 1974 the daredevil, known exclusively for motorcycle jumps, attempted to jump across Snake River Canyon in a modified steam powered rocket. This was his second choice after the government refused to let him jump across the Grand Canyon. Immediately upon launching the emergency parachute accidentally deployed, causing Evel to crash land in the bottom of the canyon, inches from the water where he would have drowned due to being unable to release himself from the safety harness.
