Thrilled my portrait of the talented force that is my Nonna Maria is a finalist in the Northern Territory Art Award this year, opening on the 29th of May.
Big thank you to Otis from @chapmanbaileydarwin for his beautiful work on the frame, everyone at @chapmanbailey_alice particularly Yul for his dry mounting expertise, and @peter_hatzipavlisfor your stunning work on the print!
~
This work explores how personal histories are embedded within domestic spaces and everyday objects. Through portraiture, I use photography not only to document family, but as a method of spending time together. There is a space that is created with the camera, that means that even when I have known someone my whole life, a new way of communicating unfolds, new conversations, new meanings and a new way of connecting that is profoundly enriching to me. It can help change old patterns of communicating and to see each other differently.
In this image, my nonna Maria sits beside her sewing machine and overlocker, the tools of her craft. As a seamstress and designer of wedding dresses, these objects function as quiet markers of time, holding the traces of repeated gestures, immense skill, detail, labour, and care accumulated across decades both within her working life and her personal life.
Photographing her allows me to slow down and encounter her differently - to listen, to learn, and to understand more about the life she lived before I knew her. In this way, the photograph holds not only a portrayal of her skill and creativity, but also the moment of closeness that was facilitated by the camera.
Through this work, the portrait becomes both document and dialogue, tracing the intersection of family, labour, and intergenerational memory.

I have joined the @photoethicscentre campaign to increase and promote awareness of ethical storytelling across the industry. This campaign aims to address the lack of industry education and awareness regarding ethics and to promoting critical thinking, reflection of practice, accountability, consent and transparency across the photographic arts and media sector.
As the Photo Ethics Centre states, βWe need more image makers who are ethically literate, able to negotiate ethical dilemmas with nuance and who can make sound ethical decisionsβ¦the pivotal role that photography plays in geopolitical events cannot be overstated. The impact of photographs can be both positive and negative and can influence at every level from the personal to the global. Photographs can stoke discrimination or influence policy.β
It has been a rewarding process to formalise the foundations of my approach to photography in a Statement of Ethics. Please have a read on my updated website - would love to hear the thoughts of others working in the sector on your own approaches.

Grateful to have talented friends/collaborators like @desertdarlinpics capture this beautiful shot of me at work β€οΈ Grateful that I continue to fall in love with photography again and again each year and each time in a different way. Thankful to have an avenue for making sense of the world and a way to connect with the people I love in it β¨

Thrilled to be a finalist in the 2026 Alice Prize with my portrait βYou Can Have It Allβ of friend and collaborator @gretel.bull.
Exhibition now showing @araluenartscentre until the 8th of June.
Big thank you as always to @peter_hatzipavlis from Final Grade for the beautiful print and @chapmanbailey_alice for their amazing work on the frame.
βWomen have been sold the lie that progress means that they can have it all, when in reality it means we are doing paid work outside of the home while continuing to do all the unpaid, invisible work in the home. We are now both the breadwinners and the house keepers...something has got to give.β - Gretel Bull
βYou Can Have It Allβ is part of Saraβs ongoing series, βBalmβ, depicting women and non-binary people in their homes in Mparntwe. A commentary on the gender labour disparity in Australia, Sara and their subjectβs share experiences about their collective experiences of domestic, emotional, logistical and advocacy labour, resulting in a cinematic documentary series of intimate and vulnerable portraits.

Exhibition final days for my ongoing series, 'Nella Miscela', now exhibiting @solgalleryspace until the 29th of March. If you can't make it in person, you can view the catalogue online (link in bio).
Nella Miscela / In the Mix is a series of four works developed from my travels to Italy in 2024. The trip held particular significance for me as a second-generation Italian-Australian migrant seeking to explore my relationship to culture, place and language.
During this time, I confronted the tension of being perceived as Australian in a place I imagined as a site of belonging. While these photographs may initially resemble tourist images - moments of beauty, stillness and everyday life - they are shaped by a more complex experience of proximity and distance.
As a second-generation migrant, the act of returning to a cultural homeland can involve both connection and estrangement. Moments of belonging were often accompanied by subtle dislocations: speaking Italian and being answered in English, navigating miscommunications, and feeling like a visitor in a place where I was searching for home.
The works hold these layered experiences together, capturing moments of peace, familiarity and profound connection while also gesturing toward the quieter tensions that sit just outside the frame.
Nella Miscela - meaning βin the mixβ - reflects the entanglement of vulnerability, euphoria and uncertainty that can arise when attempting to connect to culture as diaspora.
