Pennum Porattum was a movie I really wanted to watch on the big screen. But because it had very few screenings — that too at odd timings in Bangalore — I couldn’t catch it in theatres. Yesterday, a friend told me that it had been released on Netflix, and I couldn’t wait anymore. I watched it immediately, and I absolutely loved the movie. I loved the politics, the truths, and the realities that the story portrays.

The story is narrated through the eyes of a dog — and through how the dog observes and feels about the behaviour of the humans around him. We see the dog growing up in a toxic environment where it is always caged, never truly free to live or express itself.

As the story progresses, the dog slowly becomes the “black sheep” of the place — the one being who seems capable of thinking clearly and acting consciously. Meanwhile, the humans around him appear trapped in learned behaviour patterns, repeating what they have been taught without questioning it. They rarely use their own awareness to understand what is truly needed in the moment.

At one point, we see a group of humans losing control and blindly following what everyone else around them is doing, never really knowing what they themselves want. And when they see the dog behaving differently, thinking differently, they label him as mad and begin chasing him to death.

But fortunately — or perhaps luckily — the dog survives. The final moment where he finds his way to other like-minded animals is one of the most beautiful scenes in the film.

Yet beyond the story of the dog, I felt there was a deeper message that Rajesh Madhavan was trying to convey.

To me, it felt like he was talking about people who are self-aware — people who understand their own needs, people who want to live freely without being caged by society or by expectations. Such people are often seen as “mad” by the society around them. When they try to run toward freedom, toward a life they choose for themselves, society tends to chase them — just like how the characters in Pennum Porattum chase the dog.

Many times, people get caught.

പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയിലെ പട്ടട എന്ന സാങ്കല്പിക ഗ്രാമത്തിലാണ് സിനിമയുടെ കഥ നടക്കുന്നത്. കുറച്ചു മനുഷ്യരും ഒരു ലോഡ് മൃഗങ്ങളും കേന്ദ്ര കഥാപാത്രത്തെ അവതരിപ്പിച്ച സിനിമആഖ്യാന ശൈലി കൊണ്ടും, ചർച്ചചെയ്യുന്ന വിഷയം കൊണ്ടും മികച്ച പ്രേക്ഷക പിന്തുണയാണ് നേടിയത്. ഫിലിം ഫെസ്റ്റിവലികളിൽ മികച്ച അഭിപ്രായം നേടിയതിനു ശേഷം തീയേറ്ററുകളിൽ എത്തിയ സിനിമയ്ക്ക് തിയേറ്ററുകളിലും ജനം മികച്ച പിന്തുണയാണ് നൽകിയത്.
