Incredibly honoured to have won The Commercial Photographer 🏆 at last night’s @indesignlive #INDEAwards for @sibling_architecture’s @secca__bega
Many thanks to @johngollings for his sweet speech and for teaching me everything I know, the Gollings photography tree (with @diannasnape and @jack.lovel) are my biggest cheerleaders.
Thanks also to @imagemakersassociation for shining a light on architectural photographers and fostering a community for what can be a very solitary profession.
Lastly, huge huge thanks to all my clients who have trusted me, supported me and brought me much needed coffees 🥂

Like its counterparts around the world, Sydney’s Chinatown carries a long history of offering sanctuary to people from all backgrounds and walks of life.

Our corner on Thomas Street is steeped in that tradition. At the turn of the last century, the upstairs rooms operated as part of trade the Tiy Sang building, deeply embedded in the local banana trade.

In the decades that followed, the space rang with the clatter of clandestine mahjong games and housed newly arrived migrants - some of whom would go on to become successful business owners in the area. As families grew and the space could no longer contain them, it transformed again, adapting to a mix of uses.

During the pandemic, it quietly served as a gathering place for local traders, hosting an underground ping-pong tournament out of public view.

This season marks another transformation, one that will breathe new life into the space and open a new chapter for this corner of Chinatown.

It is easy to forget now that not long ago Chinatown was brought to its knees by the pandemic lockdowns. With only essential businesses permitted to operate, shops went dark and the streets fell silent. For many local traders, survival became a daily struggle.

Out of that hardship sprang the Dong Nam A Ping Pong Tournament held on the upper floors of the grocery. My father and other frustrated business owners from across four blocks gathered daily in secret, seeking support and refuge from the boredom. Through thick clouds of cigarette smoke, new friendships were forged in heated competition tempered only by short breaks for breath and cold tea.

Five years in, as the winds of change blow through, thisritual moves on to continue at its next Chinatown location.

Thank you to my dear friend @_katlu for chronicling  this short but meaningful chapter.
