Expressions is the Dust - Volume 5.

“These images were developed in my kitchen last year. I shot on a Pentax SLR and a Mamiya 645, different format film cameras, both from the late 80s. This was my third time at the event, where it feels increasingly inappropriate to be dealing with lithium batteries and endless images. Each year, I’ve been experimenting with different ways to capture what this week actually feels like. Last year, I chose to only use black & white film. The Nevada desert has proven to be one of the toughest environments to photograph. I was concerned with overexposing the film, & began experimenting with colored filters for black & white photography a few weeks before the event. Darker hues of red and orange are the best for reducing the intensity of a harsh blue sky, while keeping shadows alive. I settled for a Red25 filter on the Pentax, and an orange 86A filter on the 645 camera. The results are high contrast clouds in landscape scenes, and rich ‘dark’ skies when shooting against them.
I’ve been fascinated by how this gathering can recontextualize our use of space. My goal is to preserve each scene & person as we are. Burning Man is unique in its opportunity for the ‘impossible’. It’s unique in having created, maintained, and spread a hub for such vastly different, yet deeply symbiotic talents, industries, and ideas. All with no particular curation, brand affiliation, or need to exclude…
At the end of the day, it’s nothing but human. It can exist anywhere and everywhere, proving our potential beyond gain, and emphasizing the pure power of human expression. We all know it, but sometimes we forget it.
These images exist in all their imperfections, but mainly in dust.”
