Chaz Knapp
Microfolk | Drunes

NEW MUSIC:
I have a new record coming out December 5th on @aural_canyon. It’s an extension of my microfolk series, where I improvise outdoors using tape loops. While microfolk was recorded in the thick heat of summer, Winter Music was captured in the heart of winter, outside in the snow.
To say it was brutal is an understatement. The cold takes over quickly - hands, breath, focus - and in that fragility, something different emerged. These pieces are raw, reflective, and shaped entirely by the environment that made them possible.
Recorded, mixed and edited by Chaz Knapp
Mastered by @the_land_ethic.wav

NEW MUSIC ALERT:
I am really excited to announce the boxset of the first three microfolk volumes.
From Scissor Tail:
“This may be the perfect summer wind down album. We all get to enjoy the cicadas one last time before Autumn, or play these tapes and pretend summer isn't coming to a close. Chaz Knapp, Cy Werner (Magic Tuber String Band) and Chaz Prymek (Lake Mary) created such a beautiful atmospheric album - recorded live to tape in the Ozark Mountains near streams and caves. All improvised and recorded to tape with acoustic instruments, mostly; violin, banjo, and guitar. There's some occasional vocal harmonic drones and the natural drone of the summer cicadas before their final rest. It's really such a pure and peaceful album, I haven't been able to stop listening to it this summer. - ST”
My biggest gratitude to @cy.vverner and @chaz.prymek for their contributions in making some of my favorite music thus far. Also, deepest thanks to @scissortailrecords for putting so much love and time into making these beautiful box sets. Thanks to the love of my life @kim.ni.awa for the amazing artwork. And to @the_land_ethic.wav for Mastering each volume.
Set to drop first week of September, these will probably go fast, so get one while you still can!
Much love!

Hey guys- I’ve started to come out of my shell a bit and play live more and it’s been pretty fun and rewarding. I mostly make instrumental music so it’s been nice using live shows to sing songs I’ve hoarded over the years. In this social media world there seems to be a lot of pressure as an artist to navigate things a certain way and it’s overall exhausting. I’m just trying to make some weird music and enjoy the spring while I focus on school. Life doesn’t need to be anything more than that. I have some more instrumental music in the works but I don’t have the mental energy to make a record with my songs, so I’ll dump a few clips here on Instagram. I appreciate all of the kindness I’ve received and look forward to sharing more moments in the future. Life can be altered at any moment so never forget to be grateful for the little things.

“Winter Music is a new solo album by Chaz Knapp, recorded outdoors in the dead of winter. Following the spirit of his Microfolk series, this record explores how acoustic improvisation takes form in snow and sub-freezing temperatures, with frozen hands, minimal takes, and warped instruments.
Built around three cassette players and a live looping process, Winter Music features nylon-string guitar (with a neck that shrunk in the cold), voice, banjo, harmonium, bansuri flute, and shruti box. Knapp would record short loops to cassette, then improvise over them on the spot. The sessions were captured with a Zoom recorder for the tape loops and two condenser mics for the live instruments - no overdubs, no second takes. Winter Music is a quiet, solitary work shaped entirely by winter and its constraints, which culminates in a raw, imperfect, and deeply reflective sound.“

Hey- winter music is out today on @aural_canyon. Thanks to everyone who has reached out and thank you to Aural Canyon for helping this see the light of day. Hope you like the record.. much love ~~

‘Winter Music’ is Chaz Knapp’s latest journey into the Ozark Mountains. It is an improvisational, site-specific portrait of winter made with traditional instruments and field recordings.
For a deeper dive into this meditative look at landscape through music, Knapp spoke with Sound Dissection, offering a glimpse into this enterprising artist’s unique creative process.

NEW MUSIC:
You can stream a new track: wm jan19 24 (ii) from ‘winter music’ today. This song was recorded in an abandoned building on the same day as the first single, although the first track was done outside. This building gave me a place to play but not much warmth, and the piece moves in two parts, first harmonium with tape, then guitar, vocals, and the loops. I have a love and hate relationship with this song, just like I do with most of them. In these sessions I have to accept whatever the zoom captures, I wish I could control things more or caught things before I recorded, but letting go keeps me from overthinking and reminds me why I make music in the first place.
The video taken from this session can be viewed by following my links. Pre-orders are available there too.
