One of my rounds from the last beginner battle before I sliced my heel up 🤣😭💀

Something that has been fun to watch, is seeing how my brain processes in real time via my movement. You can literally see the points when my brain takes in something new or has an idea and jumps immediately to doing it.... Even if I'm mid another movement 🤪 which is exactly how I talk 🤣

I'm still exploring what posing means to me and how to use it in a way that makes sense for me. I've found that due to dancing to a lot of modern disapora electronic genres, many of them just.... Don't stop 🧍🏿‍♀ so I *could* just throw in a pose for the gold star of it all, but it never feels natural..... Yet 🤠 but I did want to try a be a lil more intentional with the pauses here.

I also got feedback at Love around, what I internalized as, "living more in the movement" which it directly tied to the earlier statement about my movement 🙂‍↕️ so for now I'm just trying to finish my words without cutting them off 😘

I got a lot of “why?” and “just for this? [shocked positive]” when I mentioned I travelled up for this weekend. But its simple for me, to have new experiences, connect with more people 🤠 and dance 🤩

The dinners, the sessions, the battles, the conversations 🥹 This was my first dance related solo trip and but I didn’t feel lonely for one second.

Bossy reflection 1/?

Pulling up to the next Bossy with a 3v3 ATL crew for SURE 🥹 What a lovely event. Well organized, amazing music, crazy prelims and top 16 rounds 😭😭😭

I enjoyed this prelim a lot. I’ve been on a high energy kick and just……spinning a lot. Lots of cycles have been closing and opening for me and maybe that’s a part of it.

But also it feels really good 🤪

I just tried to not get too lost in that this time.

Time to get off the battle train and back into the lab and the club 😗 but definitely a lovely stopping point for me 🤠

Did my first public set for open decks @gworlsrunit yesterday and only accidentally cut the music off twice 🤠

When I was playing around with what I wanted to play for the set, it ended up being almost 30 minutes so I cut it.

Reflections on DJing so far:

💥 Learning so much with every set I put together, even listening to this one there's things I'd try again. But posting it as a record of where I am now to compare to where I will be.

💥 The threads of connection through African and the Disapora music is crazy and coming face to face to those connections by mixing them together has been so enlightening.

1 year of whaacking reflection pt 1/?

CRAAZZYYYYY! SPOOKY!!!! FUN!!!!!!

Whaacking prelim at Waacklanta love 🤠 I was having a lot of fun this weekend 🥹 and really just wanted to enjoy my rounds. Last year I didn’t pass prelims, this year made it to top 16 ❤️‍🔥 (and finally had my first battle win 🥳) More musings to come

Beginner Battle reflections 3/3

Last one for a while 🙂‍↕️ the big one here is all about exploring my version of [insert aspect of waacking here].

Identity is an interesting thing.

Something I've been experimenting with is the concept of not having a fixed identity. So in this case, I'd normally say "I'm not a dramatic waacker". Instead of holding that identity, I've been asking myself, "what is the current version of myself's take on this idea?"

So this round is my current self's take on a more dramatic round. I tend to sit in more rhythmic interpretations when it comes to freestyle over concepts and stories; this is a big stretch for me.

I find this to be extremely helpful because whenever I encounter something that is at odds with who I believe myself to be, I reject it (often subconsciously). This approach, so far, removes the conflict of contradictions 🤠 Additionally, it allows me to honor "me" and my current wants and desires while still exploring new realms. I don't have to try on completely new and/or foreign identities. To some degree this limits me, such that I find tasks to far outside my current limitations difficult. On the other hand, it allows me to develop my own specific style consciously.

Interestingly enough, I am trying to iterate through identities to reach a point where being asked to do something far outside of my current self is much more possible. And so, I do small things I don't want to do or try as much as I can to build a person that doesn't feel so conflicted about new things 🙂‍↕️
