In 2003, my partner at the time, Kay McDougall, got us tickets to see A Mighty Wind live at The Warfield in SF. It was one of the best shows I’ve ever been to. It was the full cast from the movie. The pivotal moment of the show without a doubt was the moment Mitch & Mickey kissed during Kiss At The End Of The Rainbow. Katherine O’Hara was more precious than a pot of gold. Such a brilliant performer. We’ll be watching Home For Purim this week.

My 44th birthday was spent in the glorious city of Dallas, Texas with Benny. We went to medieval times and the Netflix House. We stayed with Cousins Jon, Rachel, Cooper & Jack. It was a perfect weekend. Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes. Onward, thru the fog!

The weirdo in its natural habitat

My grandma, Annette Pressman died this morning. It was a smooth transition to the other side. For those who didn’t know her, we lovingly referred to her as Ottie.

She lived for 98 years. Unreal. Ottie is one of a kind. She had an incredible ability to connect with people and make them feel unique and cared for. This happened with everyone she knew.

I have almost 44 years of memories with Ottie. Here is a story that has stuck with me. I have thought about this so much since I experienced it.

The last time I ran errands with Ottie and her friend, Geri was in the Spring of 2023. We picked up Geri went to a few shops to get whatever things were needed. Obviously, the final stop before dropping Geri off at her house was the See’s Candy Shop. As we were getting out of the car, Ottie said “Oh it’s the grouchy one.” We went in. Sure enough, the person working the counter was pretty cold. 

As Geri barked her extremely specific chocolate order, what piece went into which box, the counterperson met Geri where she was, barking back. It wasn’t an argument. But it didn’t feel great. 

When it came time to help Ottie, the energy changed. The counterperson lit right up. She was kind and gracious. Smiles were exchanged. It was totally different.

When we got in the car, I said “The grouchy See’s person lit up when she was helping you.”

Ottie said “About 4 years ago, we were headed in here and I thought to myself ‘I’m gonna win this person over.’ I made it my goal to get on her good side. So I’ve been working on it every time I come in. About 2 years ago, I did it. I got on her good side. She has been sweet to me ever since.”

She made a game out of it. 

Goal: Make this grumpy person smile. 

The strategy: Be relentlessly kind. 

The Prize: Being a moment of joy for said person and receiving kindness in return. And also a box of candy.

Hug everyone. Think about Ottie today, tomorrow and every day.
