China. Nigeria. Mexico. Canada. And Costa Rica, which does not ease you in gently. The arthropod diversity there is staggering in a way that stays with you, the kind of overwhelming abundance that makes the stakes of biodiversity loss feel entirely concrete rather than abstract. Across every one of these places I have carried a camera and a genuine need to understand what I was looking at, and the conclusion has always been the same: this is local action. Every park, every field season, every image shared is a contribution to something larger than any one country or any one photographer. Today is International Biodiversity Day. The global goals are clear. The work happens where you are.

As we celebrate this year’s 🌏 #BiodiversityDay, three of our 2026 @globallandscapesforum Social Media Ambassadors – @carlose_video from the Galápagos, @kea.magwaneng from Botswana, and @mayuresh_hendre_photography from India – share stories of biodiversity captured through their lenses, each rooted in the places they live and observe closely.
Through their photographs 📸, we see biodiversity as something unfolding – wildlife in motion, landscapes under change, and the subtle interactions that often go unnoticed but hold ecosystems together. Each image is a moment of attention and a way of telling the story of life 🌀 where they are.

Happy International #BiodiversityDay! 🌸 🌳 🐘 🌊
To celebrate the role of local & global action for #nature towards UN Biodiversity #COP17, the doors of the International Environment House II opened to welcome the #GENeva community & beyond.
On the road from Geneva to Yerevan, high-level representatives underscored the importance of keeping the momentum high as the deadline to achieve the #KMGBF approaches. While recognizing systematic changes must occur at the global level, local action and synergies across actors and fields remain key enablers to achieve these goals.

#IDB2026 #BiodiversityDay #LocalAction #ForNature @UNBiodiversity
Biodiversity is being lost at an unprecedented rate. But #BiodiversityDay shows us the fight back has begun - and it is grounded in local action.
This year, International Day for Biological Diversity reminds us that global progress begins locally.
The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework is our global roadmap to protect nature. But this goal will only be achieved by what happens on the ground.
In cities and communities.
In businesses and financial systems.
Through local and regional leadership.
And by recognizing the knowledge and stewardship of Indigenous Peoples.
Across the world, people are already stepping forward. They are restoring ecosystems, reshaping economies, and building resilience.
But the science is clear: we must accelerate action.
So on #BiodiversityDay and every day, let us deliver local action for global impact.

Every action for biodiversity leaves a mark 🌿
Whether through restoring ecosystems, supporting sustainable practices, sharing knowledge or taking action in your community, individual and collective efforts can contribute to a healthier future for people and nature alike 🌍
This #BiodiversityDay, leave your fingerprint for nature.

🌿 Happy International Biodiversity Day! 🌍✨
On May 22nd, the world celebrates biodiversity. But who’s been protecting it all along?
Women have spent generations documenting, preserving, and transmitting knowledge about the natural world. A landmark 2026 report by the CBD Women’s Caucus and @the_iied — drawing on 70 organizations across 33 countries — confirms what many already knew: the work exists. The knowledge is there. What’s missing is recognition.

This International Day for Biological Diversity, we amplify the women whose fingerprints are already all over the planet’s biodiversity — even if the data systems haven’t caught up yet.

🌏 Global goals. Local action. Shared future. This #BiodiversityDay, let’s make the invisible visible by highlighting the actions happening in communities around the world.
🌈 The path to 2030 runs through local action. From communities to cities, individuals to institutions, every effort counts. Governments, indigenous peoples, local communities, businesses, youth and civil society all have a role to play.
🐝 Biodiversity shapes our lives, our livelihoods, and our future. Yet the solutions are often local. The implementation of the Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework (#KMGBF) happens on the ground, through the actions of people everywhere.
🏡 Look. Connect. Act. Share. Change begins where you are. Across the world, communities are already taking action for biodiversity. Explore biodiversity where you live, join local initiatives, take action, and share your impact. This is how global change happens.
💪 This #InternationalDayOfBiologicalDiversity, let’s act now and help turn local efforts into global impact.

New guide released today!
How does each target of the Global Biodiversity Framework relate to Indigenous Peoples?
This #Biodiversity Day, we are launching a new guide to the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) designed specifically for Indigenous Peoples. It is a tool for communities to better understand how they can contribute to the Framework and ensure their rights are respected in the new plan to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.
Each of the 23 targets is broken down into key sections
🌱A simple explanation of each target
🌱Why it's important for Indigenous Peoples
🌱Potential risks and opportunities for Indigenous Peoples
🌱Important questions to consider
🌱How it relates to the official CBD text and other targets
The aim of this guide is for Indigenous Peoples to be better able to take full advantage of the GBF's advances and protections, and give them the tools they need to hold states accountable for their commitments to conserve and sustainably use biodiversity and ensure benefits from the use of genetic resources are shared fairly and equitably.

Biodiversity loss is not only an environmental challenge: it is a societal, economic and health crisis.
On the International #BioDiversityDay, we are reminded that commitments alone are not enough: we need action. 🌍
Only by acting locally and working together, we can create a real global impact.
We call for:
🌱 aligning public and private financing with biodiversity goals;
🌿 strengthening the One Health approach;
📊 turning global commitments into measurable local outcomes.
Civil society must remain at the heart of decision-making, including farmers, fishers, forest owners, young people and indigenous communities.
Because a healthy planet means healthy people.
