MADE IN HONG KONG
From Cotton Mills to Conscious Closets
From Hong Kong’s first cotton mill to sustainable fashion today. Let’s celebrate Hong Kong’s craftsmanship, culture, and conscious consumption at The Redress Closet! But first, what is the history of the Hong Kong textile industry...?
Pre -War Roots
1900s-1930s
In 1899, Jardine Matheson founded Hong Kong’s first spinning mill, kicking off a new textile era. By the 1930s, weaving and knitting thrived, producing cotton socks, tees, and towels from imported yarn.
Post-War Boom
1940s-1950s
Skilled workers from China revitalized Hong Kong’s textile scene post-WWII. By 1954, 17 local spinners helped build an industry that shaped Hong Kong’s economy.
Golden Age
1960s-1970s
By the 1970s, Hong Kong was the world’s top clothing exporter. With advanced spinning mills and Commonwealth trade perks, local fashion went global.
Modern Transition
1980s-1990s
As production moved to China, Hong Kong shifted gears which evolved into a design and innovation hub. As a result, Made in Hong Kong pieces became rarer, but creativity flourished.
Legacy and Future
As clothing manufacturing faded in the 2000s, “Made in Hong Kong” pieces now echo premium quality and nostalgic charm.
