Last month we celebrated the opening of the new Mayfair gallery @monologuelondon with a wonderful evening discussing the story behind @orior_furniture

In conversation with its creative director Ciaran McGuigan, we delved into its Irish roots, the family story behind the brand and its future investment into craft. Orior provides a great example in how brands can take accountability for the future of craft by offering clear apprenticeship pathways for younger talents. As well as creating beautiful statement pieces for the home.

If you havenโ€™t had the chance to pop by the new space @monologuelondon the second event of this โ€˜In Conversationโ€™ series takes place on 14th May with Fabrizio Cantoni @cc_tapis where we will discuss the inspiration behind the studioโ€™s recent collaboration with @fornasetti

If you would like to attend, drop me a message to get further details.

Last month @iconeye returned to @furnitureweek.capetown as its International Media Partner and we once again came away feeling inspired by the level of local and national talent on display. From collective exhibitions, to immersive installations, insightful events and industry conversations, the city came to life as showrooms opened their doors to welcome visitors from across the world.

With its theme of โ€˜Contemporary Craftโ€™, this edition offered a deeper glimpse into South Africaโ€™s creative sectors, where artisanal craft and contemporary design unite.

@roddyclarkedesign also hosted a conversation on behalf of @iconeye speaking with Italian designer @fralanzavecchia to discuss her work during the Italian Design Day held @poliform_official as part of the fair - a result of an blossoming international collaboration between the Cape Town Italian Consulate and @furnitureweek.capetown

First event of the year incomingโ€ฆ see you next week @maisonetobjet

Details for both talks below:

Friday 16th January 5pm
HERITAGE MEETS MODERNITY: THE ENDURING RELEVANCE OF JEAN ROYรˆRE
In conversation with Vladimir Markovic, the founder of Royรจre and representative of the Jean Royรจre Estate, design journalist Roddy Clarke explores the work of the legendary designer and the studioโ€™s work in upholding his legacy today through the implementation of contemporary production techniques. Through innovation and artisanal excellence, heritage is being preserved. @jeanroyere

Saturday 17th January 12pm
ORGANIC CYCLES AND DESIGN: THE DIALOGUE BETWEEN LIFE AND ARTEFACT
As we become increasingly aware of the fragility of the living world with the rigor of human-made artefacts, the integration of organic materials is now a core component of the contemporary design world. However, beyond function and materiality, are its uses showcasing the lessons we can learn from the natural world on a more human level? Roddy Clarke discusses with designer Marcin Rusak and Lay Koon Tan of Nature Squared. @marcinrusak @nature.squared

Reflecting back on a year always feels a bit intense, especially when most of the time Iโ€™m thinking about whatโ€™s ahead or whatโ€™s next. However, while 2025 had its challenges, there were some special moments too.

While I talk and write about design, my true passion is people and I feel honoured that I get to meet so many inspiring talents through my work. One of my highlights was the hosting and curating of the design discussions series @design.london where I decided to shake up traditional talk formats with round table sessions, interactive workshops, a guided meditation and design-based game shows. In doing so, it gave voice to a much wider cross-section of the industry leading to thought-provoking conversations that helped us reimagine the future.

I look forward to continuing these conversations and activations in 2026 where design can be positioned as a valuable tool for change and such events can foster connection and community - things we all need more of in uncertain times. Stay tuned and a happy new year to you all! ๐Ÿ’šโค๏ธ

Grab a copy of todayโ€™s @fthtsi @ft_weekend where you can find my latest feature discussing โ€˜new ways with woodโ€™ and the designers bringing new meaning and aesthetic to the material.

From Jesse Schlesinger drawing on his personal experience working as a carpenter alongside his father to the avant- garde creativity of @ofstedaleng it is a reminder to embrace the natural beauty and inherent features of the material. And, in normalising the intrinsic grain patterns and so-called โ€˜flawsโ€™ of timber, can it help to shift perceptions on what perfection in the material really means? Perhaps accepting such โ€˜imperfectionsโ€™ is the most radical act we can take when utilising natural resources. Thanks to all the wonderful designers featured within the piece bringing a new flair to timber and to @ahec_europe who work tirelessly to raise awareness around its considered application.

As @ofstedaleng says, โ€œI hope others dare to question
conventions, dig into the soul of the material and create something the industry hasnโ€™t imagined yet.โ€

Thank you for the commission @jackiedaly_editor ๐Ÿ’š

My recent feature in the latest issue @iconeye discusses the collaboration between design houses @vitra and @rimowa which was unveiled earlier this year. Resulting in an adaptable toolbox and stool, the collection paid homage to their aligned design sensibilities and is a great example of how heritage and modernity can seamlessly come together.

Looking back over the month one of the themes that came up a lot in industry conversations was the need for more community and connection. Thatโ€™s why it was great to host the Out Of Office Run Club @morramadesign @tdcpr as part of @l_d_f_official

It was a great opportunity to see the design community come together in other settings than a showroom or exhibition, allowing for more personal connection and open discussion. Added to that, it was a welcome moment to prioritise exercise to help clear the head amidst a crazy week of events. Running has been a huge part of my life for the last 20 years and the mental benefits have made a huge impact on me. It was great to share this with everyone there, thanks for coming and thanks for having me!
