jonny sun
tv writer/producer (bojack horseman; mrs. davis; the off weeks; some unannounced things) & nyt bestselling author (goodbye, again; everyones a aliebn)

How do writers work with producers? 🤔 On this episode of #InProximity, film and TV writer, illustrator, and NYT Bestselling author @JonnySun sits with producer and Proximity’s head of film Rebecca Cho to share what they’ve learned about collaborating as writer and producer, transitioning into film and TV from another medium and industry, and developing a project from idea to screenplay.

This Sunday on #InProximity: @JonnySun! 🎙️
Jonny is a film and TV writer, illustrator, and the New York Times Bestselling author of Goodbye, Again.
He gained over half a million followers on Twitter by sharing thoughts and other musings as the character Jomny Sun, an alien trying to navigate life, love, and loneliness. In 2017, those tweets made him one of Time Magazine’s 25 Most Influential People on the Internet, and Jonny adapted Jomny into his first illustrated novel, Everyone’s a Aliebn When Ur a Aliebn Too.
Jonny’s work was noticed by fans and followers like Lin-Manuel Miranda and Raphael Bob-Waksberg, which led to turns illustrating Miranda’s book, Gmorning, Gnight!: Little Pep Talks for Me and You and writing on Waksberg’s groundbreaking animated TV series, Bojack Horseman. He was also a writer on Mrs. Davis, created by Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof and is currently a writer-producer on a new Netflix Original Series.

the finale of MRS DAVIS is out now. i am so grateful to have been part of such a brilliant group of writers. it was a true joy to write this ambitious, emotional, bonkers season of television with them, and i feel like the joy comes through in every frame of the show. i love being a writer. i love these writers. this show could not have happened without a writers room. i hope you enjoy. ❤️

episode 107 of MRS DAVIS is out today. i co-wrote it with the incredible @jningster and it is the episode i am proudest of in my (very early) career as a tv writer. i hope that i am lucky enough to have a longer career as a tv writer, and i will know that even if i do, this episode will still stand among the scripts that i feel the most proud of. i hope you watch it and give our show a chance.
i love our beautiful bonkers show MRS DAVIS so much and this show exists because of the brilliant writers that i got to work with, and with tara hernandez and @damonlindelof at the helm in the driver and navigator seats, respectively. and i would like to celebrate the MRS DAVIS writers here by sharing all their writing credits as they appear on screen across all our episodes. they are a incredible group and i feel truly blessed and honored to have written this season of television with them.
none of your favorite shows would exist without the writers who wrote them. hell, none of your least favorite shows would exist without the writers who wrote them, either — and imagine how sad it would be to not have shows that you love to hate! there would be no favorite characters without writers. there would be no favorite lines without writers. there would be no stories without writers, period. this is what’s at stake right now.
we are in a moment where the craft and art and business of writing in the film and tv industry is being fundamentally threatened. i would love to write for another show in the future. i would love for all of us to have that opportunity. and more than anything i would love for all the writers of the future who have yet to come into this industry — and especially our poc, queer, and/or other traditionally underrepresented future writers — to have the ability to write and thrive here. because we need you.
but writers are currently being squeezed out and it is becoming increasingly more and more difficult to make a living as a writer in the industry — there are fewer jobs with lesser days and lower pay. the exploitation we are facing is the same exploitation that every field is facing, and that is what we are fighting against. #wgastrong
