Across the country and around the world, the Jane Goodall Institute and Roots & Shoots groups are restoring our global canopy – tree by tree.

In the United States, one Roots & Shoots group started by high schoolers is focused on restoring The Woodlands, a special-purpose district outside of Houston. They recently planted and spread mulch around 300 trees along a local trail where housing developments had encroached on designated wild land – and now, this greenbelt can heal.

In Indonesia, one Roots & Shoots group celebrated Jane Goodall Day by committing to plant 1,500 trees in honour of Dr. Jane. Inspired by the idea Dr. Jane constantly espoused that each of us can make an incredible difference, these young leaders are growing hope for a greener future.

In Uganda, in celebration of the 35th anniversary of Roots & Shoots, the Jane Goodall Institute Uganda is aiming to plant 35,000 trees. They are working with schools across the country to organize tree planting activities, and each tree is going to be named after one of the students who planted it – an inspiring symbol of hope growing strong.

Want to start your own Roots & Shoots group and help plant more trees? Go to RootsAndShoots.ca to see how you can get started.

Iconic. Always.

Throughout her remarkable lifetime, Dr. Jane championed wildlife protection, community-led conservation, and youth leadership. She inspired millions and reminded everyone that each of us has an important role to play.

Day in and day out, she worked to make sure that animals, people, and the environment could all thrive – and we're honoured to carry forth her mission, both here in Canada and across Africa. You can, too.

• Find out how you can get involved with Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots program and develop your own service projects: RootsAndShoots.ca.

• Sign up for the first-ever Jane Goodall Hike for Hope, which takes place across Canada this October 3rd and 4th: HikeForHope.ca.

• See how you can make an impact by eating less meat, by composting, and by recycling your electronic devices: JaneGoodall.ca/Take-Action.

Fun fact for you: This network of forested islands forms the heart of the Jane Goodall Institute's Tchimpounga Sanctuary.

Surrounded by winding waterways, tropical vegetation, and abundant biodiversity, these protected islands create an important and natural refuge where rescued chimpanzees can live in spacious, semi-wild habitats.

Living in social groups within this environment lets chimpanzees nest, forage, climb, and build the social bonds and natural behaviours that are essential for proper development.

And as the chimpanzees roam freely across the islands, dedicated caregivers from the Jane Goodall Institute continue to monitor behaviours, diets, and more.

Boats go to the island shores carrying fresh produce sourced from local markets, ensuring each chimpanzee gets the nutrition and care they need – so they can keep thriving in this protected ecosystem.

To learn more about these remarkable creatures and the care they get at Tchimpounga, go to JaneGoodall.ca/Tchimpounga. And to donate to support this critical work, go to JaneGoodall.ca/Donate.

Note: The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada does not endorse the handling of, or close proximity to, wildlife. This represents a sanctuary context with trained professionals.

You may have seen news about the "chimpanzee civil war" that has taken place in Uganda, where the split in the chimpanzee community in Kibale National Park has resulted in the deaths of numerous chimpanzees.

We're sending our deepest condolences to the research team, and to everyone who has been affected by this development.

Although the fission and subsequent aggression between the two groups is a deadly chapter in this 30-year study, this is not a new phenomenon — Dr. Jane famously observed chimpanzee warfare herself in the 1970s, with the Kasekela community in Gombe.

Bill Wallauer, the Jane Goodall Institute's filmmaker and scientific advisor, spoke about the emotional difficulty of witnessing animal warfare: "This has no doubt been a difficult time for the whole research team, and a loss to the forest as a whole. Every chimpanzee's life is precious and, as this case illustrates, we still have much to learn about their complex behaviour and relationships."

To read more of Bill's reflections, and to learn about Morton – the chimpanzee seen here, who was one of the victims of the Kibale conflict – use the link in our bio.

Scientist. Conservationist. Humanitarian. Goofball.

That was Dr. Jane! Many knew her for her groundbreaking work with wild chimpanzees, and for her work championing community-led conservation, but Dr. Jane also knew how to have fun.

She could crack a joke and plan a prank just as often as she could share a powerful message. That playful approach helped her connect with people across cultures, generations, and backgrounds.

Perhaps it's because of the moments seen here that her message continues to resonate. Now more than ever, we need laughter and playful moments – and Dr. Jane was always thrilled to deliver.

Out in the wild, this very routine unfolds every evening.

The chimpanzee carefully chooses branches, bending and weaving them together to form an indestructible and immovable nest. This behaviour is passed down from generation to generation, and perfected over time.

As seen here, captured by the Jane Goodall Institute's Bill Wallauer, this moment reflects decades of observation by our researchers. This activity provides an essential look into chimpanzee life, development, and intelligence.

Last June, this knowledge was used for the census that the Jane Goodall Institute led in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. For the first time ever, our team led an exhaustive and comprehensive chimpanzee census in the dense woods.

Researchers did not need to rely on counting chimpanzees themselves. Instead, they counted their nests! Because chimpanzees build new nests every night, these structures are vital clues. By recording nest location, distance, and recency, scientists can estimate population size and better understand how chimpanzees use the forest.

This is why longterm research is important. What started with careful observation in Gombe has grown into an essential foundation for science-based conservation in places like Bwindi.

"I was gone four whole hours, and the family had no idea where I was – they even called the police."

When she was four, Dr. Jane wanted to learn about hens and find out how they laid eggs – and so she went off, without letting anyone know where she was going.

When she came back four hours later, her mom was not mad. Instead, her mom wanted to know what Jane had discovered on her adventure.

Dr. Jane said that response, and the support her mom gave her throughout her life, helped her become the legend we know her as: "A different kind of mother might have crushed that scientific curiosity, and maybe I wouldn't have done what I've done."

Today, on Mother's Day, we thank Vanne Goodall for the support she showed Jane – and we celebrate all of the mothers and mother figures who are embracing genuine curiosity and raising brilliant leaders.

Happy Mother's Day!

Dr. Jane once said that Flo, seen here, "was a wonderful mother — patient, tolerant, affectionate, and playful."

She was the grand matriarch of Gombe when Jane began studying wild chimpanzee behaviour, and she impacted Jane's understanding of mother-child bonds enormously.

While three of her children – Faben, Figan, and Fiji – grew up to be leaders, Flo's most well-known offspring was probably Flint. Flint and Flo were very close, and Flint often clung to her even when he was long past childhood.

When she passed away, Flint grew very depressed and passed away soon after. While this story is tragic, it is an important reminder of the role that chimpanzee mothers play.

As we approach Mother's Day, we wanted to highlight that role. We also wanted to let you know that, when you buy one of our new Mother's Day eCards, you are ensuring our work – the work that Dr. Jane championed – can continue.

From ongoing research, to youth-led environmental projects, to community-led conservation initiatives, to individualized and specialized care for rescued chimpanzees, this work is important. With these cards, you can help support its future – and give your mom her most meaningful card yet.

To order one of these cards for your mom or the mother figure in your life, go to JaneGoodall.ca/Gift-Shop.

Happy 100th birthday, Sir David Attenborough!

For decades and decades, Sir Attenborough has inspired generations to appreciate – and protect – the natural world. His genuine passion for storytelling and conservation served as the foundation for his friendship with Dr. Jane, and some even jokingly referred to the two as the "Tarzan and Jane" of the animal world.

Last year, Dr. Jane wrote this note to mark his 99th birthday: "You have done more than anyone to educate people around the globe about the magic of the natural world so that more and more people are working to protect the environment and the animals, plants, and trees that, together, comprise the ecosystems that support life. Forests, oceans, wetlands, prairies, and all the rest."

Her words ring true today, too. Cheers to an incredible and inspiring century of animal advocacy!
