Canuck Place Childrens Hospice
Canuck Place is BC's pediatric palliative care provider to over 946 children with life-threatening illnesses and the families who love them.

The Cleugh family learned that grief and joy can coexist in ways they never expected. Everyday moments filled with laughter, milestones, and simply being together, are often intertwined with the ache of missing their sweet boy Bennett. They’ve learned to make space for joy while honouring his life, knowing that both are part of loving him.
This May, your gift to Canuck Place families will go twice as far thanks to our Mother's Day matching sponsor, @headlandsenvironmental. Double your impact and help provide a place where families like the Cleughs find comfort, joy, and love when they need it most.

Nurses make a big impact in our lives during some of our most vulnerable moments. They walk alongside parents through moments of uncertainty, grief, joy, and love. They comfort children through play and humour, and they create space for families to rest. The smallest gestures become our greatest memories.
As we mark the end of National Nursing Week, Canuck Place nurse Laura Wallbridge reflects on what nursing has taught her about presence, humanity, and the privilege of being trusted with people’s most vulnerable moments.

Bennett found comfort in music so the Cleugh family would sing and dance with him at home and in hospital. His mom Ashley often sang “You are my sunshine” to calm him. Music gave them something to hold on to and connect with each other.
Honour a mother's love this month and your gift will be matched up to $20,000 until May 31 by our Mother's Day Matching Sponsor, @headlandsenvironmental, supporting moms like Ashley.

Mental health support is part of every family’s journey and no one should have to navigate it alone.
This National Child & Youth Mental Health Day, we’re reminded of the importance of caring for children and families through their uncertainty and grief. Canuck Place counsellors and social workers walk alongside children and teens, making space to process big feelings, ask difficult questions, and make sense of their grief.
We’re grateful to @prosperacreditunion for pledging $15,000 this year to sustain this work. Your commitment helps ensure Canuck Place children, siblings, and parents have access to the care they need, when they need it most.

The Cleugh family carries memories of their son Bennett in their keepsakes. Castings of his tiny hands and feet, a pendant with his thumbprint, a lock of his hair, and a stuffed elephant with the sound of his heartbeat captured inside. The elephant is special to his sister Madeline, so she wanted her little brother to have one too. Bennet’s dad Gilbert has a tattoo of his handprint on his arm, to honour his memory.
These gifts help them keep Bennett close.
When you donate from now until May 31, your gift will be matched up to $20,000 by our Mother's Day Matching Sponsor, Headlands Environmental Services, supporting families like the Cleughs. Click the link in bio to double your impact.

Motherhood doesn’t end with loss.
Today is Bereaved Mothers Day and Canuck Place mom Kim Faulkner reflects on what it means to love her son Tommy—both in life and beyond. She writes about the body as memory, as connection, as a place where love continues to live. It’s a deeply personal reflection on motherhood, loss, and the ways we stay close to those we carry with us.

Do you know the difference between an Accredited Facility Dog and a therapy animal?
While both can bring incredible comfort and healing to their clients, they differ a lot more than some people realize!
PADS Accredited Facility Dogs like Gaia at @canuckplace are purpose-bred and purpose-trained for their roles within their individual organizations. They perform specific tasks that facilitate wellness, and undertake two-and-a-half years of training to do so. They also have to pass a rigorous public access test, allowing them to access spaces where other animals are usually not allowed. PADS AFDs can be found in courtrooms, police stations, hospitals, and schools across Western Canada.
Like AFDs, therapy dogs can also be amazing resources! A therapy dog will utilize their gentle nature and good manners to bring comfort when visiting places like offices, schools, and care homes.
Got questions about AFDs or therapy animals? Let us know in the comments!
