📎 THE Râsu’-plânsu’ BOOK

….
The book explores the Romanian concept of Râsu’-plânsu’ (“laughing through tears”), capturing the coexistence of humor and sorrow in everyday life. It examines how residents relocated to uniform communist-era apartment blocks during Nicolae Ceaușescu’s systematization program creatively adapted their surroundings, enclosing balconies, marking informal boundaries, and personalizing shared spaces to preserve a sense of home, community, and individuality. Through these small, everyday actions, the book reveals how people humanize rigid, impersonal urban environments and respond to imposed structures.

The publication includes a foreword by Małgorzata Margo Rejmer.

ISBN: 978-83-980368-6-3

Thanks to Krzysztof Szewczyk @_krzysztof_szewczyk_ I finally have a product photos of my book :) Wielkie dzieki Krzysiek!
I’ll admit, I’m a little scared to post them because he said there’s still a long way to go in post-processing… but you know me - patience and photo editing are not exactly my strengths 🫣

Every copy I sell now comes with a 📎 and a photo on the cover.

If you are interested to purchase it, please send me DM.

This 8th of May I will be presenting my work in an artist talk at @verweymuseumhaarlem as invited upcoming artist by @photo31.nl and curator @ioana_cobzaru_art 💛 time for a little throwback to this great experience collaborating with Ioana 2.5 years ago for a group expo at @bucharestphotofest with fellow Dutch documentary photographers exploring huma/n/ature relations.

Life has been and still is a beautiful whirlwind since and luckily I don't always prioritise sharing about it here :) There are several images that I exhibited there and other expo documentation that I will still share in the coming months.

Meanwhile, I'm planning to order some fine art prints out of my series /The Intertidal Zone/ exploring our relations as humans with the water bodies we belong to and depend upon, increasingly threatened by floods and droughts alike during the continuing onslaught of the climate crisis. If you see an image that speaks to you, don't hesitate to contact me for ordering a limited edition print 🫶

See you in Haarlem!

The Roots of Humanity – Antonio Pisani @apisani_official (IT)
18 Nov – 2 Dec 2025
Opening: 18 November, 17:00
National Library of Romania, Bucharest
Curator: Cristina Gârleşteanu @cristinagarlesteanu

In a world rushing toward automation, The Roots of Humanity asks a crucial question: what remains of the traditions that shaped us?

In the first chapter of an international series, Italian photographer Antonio Pisani captures, in striking monochrome, fragments of rural life - hayfields, hands working the land, children carrying forward the rhythm of their ancestors. Simple gestures, yet essential ones: pieces of collective memory.

As algorithms replicate and machines perfect, these communities preserve the soul. Pisani offers not nostalgia, but a warning: in a future where products may become flawless yet void of story, humanity survives in what remains imperfect, handmade, lived.

The exhibition unfolds as a multisensory experience - image, sound, texture, scent — an invitation to reconnect with the practices that built us and the people who keep them alive.

Institutional Partners: @peasantmuseum (National Museum of the Romanian Peasant), @iicbucarest (Istituto Italiano di Cultura Bucarest)

A few highlights from our time at 𝗕𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁 @bucharestphotofest 🇷🇴

The festival turns the whole city into an open gallery — exhibitions in unexpected places, conversations spilling out of venues, that good kind of energy when people genuinely care about what they’re seeing.

Special thanks to 𝗜𝗼𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗯𝘇𝗮𝗿𝘂 @ioana_cobzaru_art, a visual artist, curator, and moderator from the Netherlands, who organised the Conference Day where we presented the First Report on Photo Festival Worldwide. She brought thoughtful dialogue and insight to the festival conference.

Also special thanks to 𝗦𝘇𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗮 𝗠𝘂𝗰𝘀𝘆 @szilvi.mucsy — photographer and director of the Budapest Photo Festival, who presented the Street Hungarian Photographers exhibition with sensitivity and vision, continuing her mission to connect Europe’s photographic scenes.

Big thanks as well to 𝗜𝗼𝗻𝘂ț 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂 @ionut.trandafirescu and the Bucharest Photofest crew for hosting us! 🎨📷

The 10th edition of Bucharest Photofest concluded with a remarkable live AV performance by Drew McDowall, one of the most influential figures in experimental and industrial music. Known for his work with Coil and Psychic TV, McDowall presented an intense and carefully constructed set that combined decades of sonic experimentation into a focused and powerful live experience.

Visual artist Pedro Maia joined as guest collaborator, contributing live analog film projections that complemented and expanded the sound performance. His visuals added depth and precision, transforming the concert into a cohesive dialogue between image and sound.

The 10th edition of Bucharest Photofest may have closed its main events last Sunday, but the city still breathes photography.

This weekend, several exhibitions remain on display - from documentary stories to conceptual journeys - each offering a glimpse into the heart of this year’s festival.

Take your time, explore, and let the images speak for themselves.

Hello everyone,

I would like to sincerely thank Bucharest Photofest for including my film in the selection for their 10th anniversary edition and for giving it the opportunity to be shown on the big screen for the very first time.

A bigthank you to Marius Costache for the sound mix and for recording Valerinne film’s theme song at his Studio148 — you can find the link in the bio.

I’m deeply grateful to all those who have supported me along the way — to the Staicu Family for their hospitality over the years, Anca Smărăndache and Petrișor Staicu for the peaceful wanderings, and to Alexandru Daș, Anca Chiriță, Diana Voinea, Marius Costache, and Liviu Stoicescu for their invaluable help and encouragement. This film would not have seen the light of day without their generosity and support.

Finally, my thanks to everyone who joined the screening evening — your presence meant a lot.

Thank you all once again.
I hope to share new screenings soon.

Warm regards,
Mircea
