The Official Monster Raving Loony Party has named its leader and co-founder Alan “Howlin” Laud Hope as its candidate for the Makerfield by-election.

In a statement posted on social media, the party said: “We can confirm that our glorious leader Alan “Howlin” Laud Hope with selected agents will be standing against Andy Burnham in the forthcoming election in Makerfield.”

It added: “We can also confirm that there is no intention to launch a leadership bid to replace our leader.”

The by-election contest was triggered by the resignation of the Labour MP for Makerfield, Josh Simons. No date has yet been confirmed but it is expected to take place in June.

Reform UK has named its candidate to stand the Makerfield by-election.

Robert Kenyon, a self-employed plumber, has been confirmed as Reform’s official candidate for the upcoming contest in in Greater Manchester.

Kenyon stood in the constituency in the 2024 general election, and came second to Labour’s Josh Simons.

The Labour Party has officially confirmed Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham as its candidate to stand in the Ashton-in-Makerfield by-election.

The poll was triggered by the resignation of Labour MP Josh Simons, who stepped down to allow Burnham an opportunity to contest the seat - paving the way for a potential leadership challenge.

The former Labour minister has called on Labour to acknowledge that “the party has not been good enough”.

The founder of a rescue centre housing more than 100 birds of prey has said she fears the birds could be euthanised if she loses the sanctuary.

Carole Rose, 70, has being running the Wild Wings Birds of Prey rescue and conservation centre in Warrington with partner Ian Middleton for the last 17 years.

Carole said she had suffered “sleepless nights and a lot of worry” for herself and the centre’s team of volunteers after learning its lease would not be renewed in the long term.
