“We are better together. When we lead together with shared vision, values, and stories from our community, we don’t just survive… we sustain each other.” 🖤@firethistimefestival
The 17th Annual Fire This Time Festival at The Apollo Stages at The Victoria left a lasting impression, opening to sold-out audiences both weekends and setting the tone for powerful, necessary storytelling. 🔥
Through six 10-minute plays, Blackness was explored in all its depth not as a single narrative, but as layered, complex, and deeply human. Each piece stood on its own while connecting to something larger, moving through joy, politics, pain, and love in ways that stayed with you long after the curtain closed.
Founded by @kelleyngirod and directed by @kenmattm, the performances were dynamic and deeply felt. The room moved as one with laughter, sharp inhales, and moments of complete stillness where you could hear a pin drop. Featuring work by @donathanwalters, Preston Crowder, Delane McDuffie, @naomilorrain, Mo Holmes, @teniiamicazia, @kareemlucas, @nikiyamathis, @vicmusoni, and @malikechilds, each story was brought to life by a powerful collective of artists.
Now in its 17th season, @firethistimefestival continues to be a vital space for emerging voices , creating work that uplifts community and affirms that these stories don’t just belong on stage, they’re essential to it.
“Black filmmaking is a lens where we get to celebrate ourselves, fully, unapologetically, and truthfully.” 🎬
For over 30 years, the @americanblackfilmfestival in partnership with @hbo has created a true launchpad and building space for Black filmmakers to be seen, supported, and sustained.
Experiencing this conversation in real-time was nothing short of breathtaking. Hearing directly from filmmakers across generations from emerging voices to established directors like Steven Caple Jr. and Rashaad Ernesto Green was a reminder that there is no one path, no one timeline, and no limit to what’s possible.
Featuring work Two Seasons by Christine Swanson, A Beauty Supply in Queens by Princess Adenike and Oluseyi Olatujoye, Ado by Sam Henderson, A Different Tree by Steven Caple Jr, and Premature by Rashaad Ernesto Green, the screening reflected just how layered and expansive Black storytelling truly is proving that our stories are not a monolith, but a spectrum of lived experiences.
Beyond the films, it was the honesty, the process, and the perseverance behind each journey that stayed with the room. From how stories are developed to how they’re chosen and brought to life, every moment spoke to the power of staying committed to your voice. 🖤🎥

We kicked off our first Community Conversations series with Women of the Apollo, a deep dive into the ways talented and courageous women have shaped The Apollo’s 92 year legacy, both on stage and behind the scenes.
Our Archivist, Brad San Martin, and Education Coordinator, Brianna Johnson, set the tone with a guided tour of our new exhibition, Got to Be There: The Apollo, Its Stories, and Its People, complete with the unveiling of never-before-seen archival treasures!
Then, Brianna sat down with multigenre singer Nia Drummond to talk about her artistic journey and what it meant for her to perform at the Apollo at various points in her career.
You really just had to be there 😉 but if you weren’t, there’s still time to check out our in-house exhibition at The Victoria, Got to Be There: The Apollo, Its Stories, and Its People.

We sat down with writer @dmacpnumber1 for a closer look into Apollo Works in Process: water riot, a powerful new work confronting climate change, surveillance, resistance, and the fight to protect our most vital resource water. Set in a near-future Chicagoland, water riot follows an unlikely coalition of Black activists rising against an A.I. police state and the privatization of Lake Michigan. With a soundtrack rooted in the legacy of Black voices in rock, punk, and experimental music, the work moves audiences through the motions. Link in bio to secure your seat for tomorrow‼️
Harlem made its way to D.C. as @apollotheater and @howardtheatre came together for a legendary night of music, legacy, and stars at Best of The Apollo‼️
The stage pulsed with energy as icons returned and a new generation of artists carried the culture forward. From the highly anticipated return of @Clipse (@malice & @pushaT), performing music from their 2025 comeback album Let God Sort Em Out produced by Pharrell Williams, to the masterful musicianship of Grammy-winning virtuoso and former Amateur Night champion @MatthewWhitakerOfficial, every moment reflected the enduring power of Black artistry.
The night also celebrated the next wave of Apollo stars. @we_ani, an #AmateurNightApollo alum, captivated the audience with commanding vocals and undeniable presence, while @GabbySamoneMusic returned to the Apollo fam spotlight, a full-circle moment for an artist who first graced the stage through #ApolloMusicCafé.
Repping the hometown spirit of D.C., @BlackAlley brought their signature “Hood Rock” and Go-go sound to the historic venue, igniting the crowd and reminding us why live music and community remain at the heart of what we do.
It was a celebration of excellence, and the artists shaping what’s next.

What happens when who you are can’t fit in a single box? When your skin doesn’t match other people’s expectations of your heritage, or when the communities you love aren’t sure they claim you back?
“I am Black, Native American, and French Creole of Color. Did you get all that just from looking at me?” — @maryob711
Black Gumbo is a story that starts there. It follows Mary Olivette Bookman, Mobile, Alabama-raised, New York-forged, racially ambiguous for her whole life . As she works through a deceptively simple school assignment: present your culture to the class. What unfolds is an honest, joyful, and deeply human reckoning with what it means to hold multiple identities at once, and to eventually stop asking permission to celebrate all of them.
For students who have ever been asked “but what are you, really?” and for those who’ve never had to answer that question at all, Black Gumbo offers a rare thing: a stage that says all of it counts, and all of it belongs here. Link in bio.
