Carbon Register No. 3: Drawing Conversation
Saturday, May 23 at 10 AM

Wake up!! Robots are taking over the world!! Or at least Lake Michigan.

Join us at 10am tomorrow - yes you need to wake up to see robots using ink from seaweed grown in Lake Michigan, drawing its depths.

Throughout 18 months of the exhibition Myth of the Organic City, seaweed has been growing in 6018North’s 3rd floor locking carbon dioxide into organic form. Carbon Register then hauled it home, air dried it, and charred it through an anaerobic kiln firing.

If none of this makes sense, or if all of it does, come tomorrow to hear Carbon Register (Sara Black, Marc Downie, Amber Ginsburg, and scientists Andy Scarpelli and Sarah Rosengard) discuss how carbon is both primordial and life-giving and a driver of climate change and pollution. The charred seaweed, now “Carbon Black” is an amalgamation of pollutants - metals like barium, copper, lead, and zinc - the Industrial era elements that have found their way into the Lake.

So come join as robots draw the depth of tLake Michigan. Each drawing is a visualization of the 150 years of pollution in the Lake. Poetically, despite the pollution, the drawing is 281 meters - the depth of the lake - and creates a line of poetry 281 words long.
Want to know more science and data: External data utilized for this exhibit/printed on the scrolls are published in Granmo MN, Reavie ED, Post SP, Zanko LM. 2020. I will be facilitating a series of discussions at @6018north exploring the Declaration of Independence, alongside US treaties with Native nations and Native activist archives. With special presenters Dr. Dorene Wiese and Les Begay. First one this Thursday May 21 at 6pm followed by May 28 and June 4, same time. Join us!

Join us for a culinary journey from the Underworld to Spring to support our Call for Work for Persephone, an immersive play in development.

Persephone: Dinner & Fundraiser
Monday, May 4 from 7-9 PM
+ Tuesday, May 5 from 7-9 PM
#LinkInBio – 6018north.org/insta

Our experiential dinner begins in Hades, with underworld food and travels to the light of Spring fare curated by Dutch Creative Chef.

This is a taste and a peak into an immersive performance in development by Tria Smith for the Fall of 2026. This fundraiser supports the 12 artists who are developing this collaborative project throughout the Summer at 6018|North.

The Persephone myth is a lens on ecological destruction, social fragmentation, and the possibility of transformation. Persephone’s descent and return as a cycle, mirrors our current moment—marked by extraction, consumption, and growing political and environmental instability—and asks how we might collectively cultivate solutions.

This work is urgent now: as systems of extraction intensify, Persephone offers a space to confront loss, reckon with complicity, and embody renewal.

Kindly RSVP by May 1 to secure your seat for this exclusive dinner & fundraiser.

Archived audio recordings, 3 hours, 52 minutes

Over his Chicago radio show tenure, Studs Turkel recorded interviews with numerous Native Americans: Roger Buffalohead (Ponca), LaDonna Harris (Comanche), Mike Chosa (Chippewa), Charlie Hill (Oneida / Mohawk / Cree), Vine DeLoria Jr. (Sioux) , Louise Erdrich (mixed / Chippewa), Michael Dorris (mixed / Modoc), William Least Heat Moon (mixed / Osage), N. Scott Momaday (Kiowa), Benny Bearskin (Ho-Chunk), Theodore Bendoney (Navajo), Tom Bendoney (Navajo) & Mary Rosa Bendoney (Navajo).

6. Jenny Kendler
Documentation from Sculpture--->Garden, 2016-17
Fully biodegradable materials including soil and native prairie grass & flower seeds

Sculpture—>Garden was commissioned by the Chicago Park District in natural areas along the Chicago lakeshore on winter solstice, 2016. On each following equinox and solstice in 2017, newly cast sculptures were placed, to deteriorate and transform into seasonal, self-sustaining gardens of native plants.

7. Carbon Register - Sara Black, Marc Downie, Amber Ginsburg, and scientists Andy Scarpelli and Sarah Rosengard - (as seen through the window of Sangwoo's work)
Carbon Register No. 1, 2024
Biolab

Carbon Register No.1 cultivates native freshwater algae Cladophora abundant in Lake Michigan which is a primary carbon sink. Carbon is both the foundation of life on Earth and the driver of climate crisis. The artists are harvesting the algae, drying it, and hosting a gathering in May to kiln-carbonize it into 'carbon black.'

8. Tria Smith
Plastic Bottles Collection, 2023-2024
Plastic bottles

Working with Edgewater Environmental Coalition on recurring beach cleanups, Smith and 6018North are making visible the passive litter and waste that threatens our waterways in the Great Lakes and throughout the world's Oceans. Originally created for 6018North’s Water exhibition, it was reconfigured by Lise Haller Baggesson and Eleanor Ross.

Thank you, Newcity ( @newcitymag ) and Brian Hieggelke for the lovely mention:
"Without Tricia Van Eck's conceptual, political and whimsical installation at 6018|North,...I don't think it will be as fun."

We're sad not to be part of the fair this year, but 6018|North is at home. We are open Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 PM, Please come visit!

Do you remember the first artwork? It's Extraction, by Luftwerk ( @luftwerk ), featured at our EXPO booth last year!

1-2 Luftwerk
Extraction, 2024
Sand and botanicals sourced from the Chicago Botanic Garden

In memory of the native landscape, Extraction includes layers of soils and botanicals as if rising out of the ground or the wall. Construction is an everyday sight that alludes to progress and development, but often outweighs the stewardship of land and sustainability.

These images are Annika Wu's beautiful photographs of our windows, a glimpse of Myth of the Organic City!

3-4. Jane Georges
Soft Shoulder road sign, 2023/2024
Swarovski crystal strands, mirrored acrylic lettering, jewelry findings, dried orange peel, reflective road beads, dyed eyeglass lens, found holey rock

a road poem written on august 15, 2023:
"through physical body, my subconscious spirit murmurs. bouncing off places inside of me, then found in the physical world, like sonar.
the retrograde of the ricochet, seeks familiar, yet reinterpreted, destinations.
the "soft shoulder" kept getting softer
until it became the road,
and then,
so did i."
