Split Second, 2025
Immersive installation
Split Second is an immersive installation that materializes the elusive phenomenon of déjà vu. The viewer becomes the present moment, standing between a portal to the future, an abstract chrome mirror, and a portal to the past, a golden frame projecting a live feed.
A webcam records the viewer’s reflection, which is then projected with a slight delay into the frame behind them. What they see in the mirror is not their immediate self, but a ghost from a moment just passed. This temporal rift creates a disorienting loop, compelling one to question their own senses and memory. Split Second invites a personal investigation into the fragile nature of time, perception, and the haunting feeling that you have been here before.

Here are some detail shots from the Longing - Light & Sound Interactive Installation, showcased at the Layers: Material Realities exhibition held at ATC Gallery on April 17th, 2025.
Curated by professor SV Randall
Lồng-ing (longing), Lồng in Đèn Lồng (noun) /dɛŋ ləwŋ/ in Vietnamese means lantern lights.
Longing is an interactive light and sound installation created in collaboration with Diamond Nguyen and Bao Tran Vo. Through Vietnamese landscapes and cultural memory, it explores the connection between nature and self, memory and place. Inspired by rice fields, coastlines, and monsoon rhythms, it evokes a sense of belonging and ancestral presence. Crafted from bamboo, willow, mulberry, and rice paper, the sculptures reflect traditional craftsmanship and organic forms. Ambient sounds and binaural tones awaken the Earth’s quiet voices, offering a meditative space for reflection. Through light, sound, and material, Longing becomes a living map of memory—fragile yet grounded, ever-shifting yet deeply rooted in Vietnamese identity and the shared human longing for connection.

Our first attempt to bring Longing to life in the woods began one cold March night. We moved through darkness, guided only by headlamps and hope—repositioning sculptures, stretching tangled wires, fine-tuning code, and testing the breath of each sensor. The forest held its breath with us. But just as everything neared alignment, the rain arrived—soft at first, then relentless—soaking the earth, turning paths to mud, and halting our efforts. Longing remained unfinished, unable to make its debut at Midnight in Nowhere: Rite of Spring. Still, that night stayed with us—fragile, chaotic, and quietly beautiful in its own way.
