Lenny S @kodaklens was in the studio when Pharrell built the beat from scratch then stepped in the booth and laid the hook right in front of him.

One group text to Jay and hip hop later, everybody pulled up. Jay went in and finished “I’m a Hustler” in 15 minutes. The video was already locked. The single was already planned. And just like that — it was all gone.

That’s how history actually gets made.

Happy Birthday to JAY-Z — one of the greatest to ever touch a mic.

On a day we celebrate Hov, it’s only right to look back at the moment the world almost missed — when Jaz-O first heard a young kid from his building who called himself Sean. Jaz-O remembered the day clearly: he had just come home from college, and his man was saying, “There’s this young kid in the building… he’s good. I ain’t never heard nobody like him.” 

That kid became the artist we know today — a cultural force, a lyrical architect, and one of hip-hop’s most important voices.

Today we salute Hov’s legacy, the journey from Marcy to global icon, and the early believers like Jaz-O who recognized the spark before the world caught on.
