✺ Ninety Percent of Everything

✺ Ninety Percent of Everything
is an artistic research project investigating the impact of maritime logistics on the climate crisis. To achieve this, it examines the port as a critical device interconnecting, ecological balances, commercial flows, and social and geopolitical dynamics.

The title draws inspiration from the book whith the same name by British journalist Rose George [ @rosegeorge3 ], which reveals how maritime transport — the invisible engine behind approximately 90% of everyday goods — profoundly shapes the production, distribution and consumption of commodities, thereby influencing our habits and our relationship with the planet.

Chi viene rappresentato?
Quale relazione esiste tra comunità, territorio e giustizia sociale?
Quali modelli alternativi possiamo ancora immaginare?

✺ Gruppo Grendi, founded in 1828 as a family business, has grown, generation after generation, to become one of the leading integrated logistics and maritime transport operators, both nationally and internationally. Over nearly two centuries, it has evolved from a freight forwarder to a shipowner, and finally to a port terminal operator. Today, it operates shipping lines, container terminals, and an integrated logistics network. As benefit Company and Certified B Corp, the group combines innovation and positive impact – for environment, people and communities.

Grendi supports Ninety Percent of Everything by bringing the groups aboard the Grendi Star: they will sail from Marina di Carrara to Cagliari on an operational cargo ship. During the crossing, they will have the opportunity to collect data and gain first-hand knowledge of the dynamics of maritime logistics, the core of the project.

▪️ Come candidarsi

→ NPoE / DUCALE SPAZIO APERTO: LA BASE DELLA RESIDENZA

→ NPoE / THE PORT AS A CRITICAL DEVICE

✺ Ninety Percent of Everything takes the port as its starting point — not as a backdrop, but as a critical dispositif through which to explore the relationships between maritime logistics, the climate crisis, and the social and geopolitical dynamics that shape global trade.
The port is where ecological urgency and geopolitical tension converge: a threshold where the weight of global supply chains meets the fragility of marine ecosystems and the vulnerability of maritime and port labor.
Here is where the invisible costs of consumption become suddenly, undeniably material.

→ NPoE / CURATOR

Meet of curator of the project

→ Maria Pina Usai PhD, independent researcher and curator

✺ Attracted to the instability of sea-related landscapes, she explores the coast as a paradigm of contemporary transformations, with a situated approach that intersects art, science, and community engagement. She founded U-BOOT Lab and the MEDSEA Foundation, and she has worked with the Sardinian Coastal Conservation Agency. She is the artistic director of Zones Portuaires Genova and curator of The Ocean Without Us, Abitare Costa Paradiso, and Tunèa, which was exhibited at the Italian Pavilion TERRÆ AQUÆ at the 19th Venice Architecture Biennale. Author of scientific and divulgative publications, she is co-author of Abitare la Vacanza (Silvana Editoriale, 2023).

Ninety percent of Everything emerges from a decade-long experience with Zones Portuaires, a festival in Genoa that has become a platform for research, opening up the port infrastructure to the city as a collective heritage. The port is where the city recognizes its identity. Here, relationships and conflicts shape social, political, cultural, and ecological discourse.
The project explores the link between maritime logistics and the climate crisis, understood in its systemic dimension, the result of the interconnections between global consumption, ecological balances, economic interests, and social and geopolitical dynamics.

Meet the photographer of the project

→ Simone Lezzi Photographer / Director

✺ Simone Lezzi is an Italian photographer based in London whose work engages with portraiture, cultural
heritage, and site-specific image-making. His practice focuses on how controlled light and spatial structure
shape perception, identity, and material presence. He develops his practice from The Heath2 Studio and is the founder of ELPA — East London Platform for Arts

For Ninety Percent of Everything he will conduct a photographic research project on human presence within logistical infrastructures – between operational cargo ships and port areas. Not a reportage about the port, nor a documentation of maritime work. Rather, a slow observation of what happens to people inside a system designed for goods – made of routes, schedules, space and operational rules that organise continuos movement without requering visible human presence.

→ NPoE / NINETY PERCENT OF EVERYTHING - THE BOOK THAT INSPIRED THE PROJECT

✺ The title draws inspiration from the book with the same name by British journalist Rose George [ @rosegeorge3 ], which reveals how maritime transport — the invisible engine behind approximately 90% of everyday goods — profoundly shapes the production, distribution and consumption of commodities, thereby influencing our habits and our relationship with the planet.

A vast, largely hidden infrastructure that crosses oceans, connects continents and sustains global trade — yet remains almost entirely out of sight, and out of mind. We rarely stop to think about the distance our objects have travelled, the routes they have followed, and most of all the crews that make their arrival possible.
Ninety Percent of Everything takes this blind spot as its starting point: an invitation to look at what usually stays off frame, and to ask what our everyday consumption truly costs — ecologically, socially, geopolitically.
